Serves as the top nursing executive to provide leadership and administrative direction for nursing services. Ensures compliance with external regulatory and professional standards and internal standards of care. Formulates and shares a comprehensive vision for delivering healthcare in a practice culture that is patient-focused and cost-effective. Supports and facilitates the Hospital’s commitment to quality improvement through interdisciplinary teamwork and empowerment. Creates and strengthens strong professional relationships with physicians, the executive management team, and the internal and external nursing community.
Responsibilities
- Integrates organizational objectives into practice as outlined in the strategic plan, aligning with the overall mission of the organization and the healthcare needs of the community.
- Implements, interprets, and ensures compliance with philosophies and policies established by the executive management staff and the Hospital Board.
- Designs organizational structure and practice to reflect utilization of available resources and responsiveness to personal and professional development of nursing staff.
- Defines and interprets nursing practice and patient care needs, establishing and maintaining a suitable, caring environment for patient care.
- Develops and implements policies, standards, and programs that support professional practice models with a patient-centered care focus.
- Provides mechanisms for staff participation in the development, implementation, and evaluation of nursing policies and programs at all levels of the organization.
- Ensures competent staff with appropriate skill mix to achieve expected healthcare outcomes.
- Sets the climate for a collaborative practice setting with physicians, nurses, other caregivers, and support departments.
- Participates in developing, implementing, and evaluating Hospital policies and programs related to financial, human, material, and information resource allocation.
- Establishes and maintains a financial plan that integrates the Hospital’s mission and goals, including financial forecasting and planning.
- Reviews annual budgets submitted by department directors and makes adjustments to ensure financial stability.
- Ensures authorized budgetary procedures are properly used in assigned departments and reviews variances from budget regularly, implementing corrective actions as needed.
- Develops policies and programs that are economically feasible and conducive to the personal and professional development of nursing staff.
- Creates a plan to ensure recruitment and retention of qualified staff and leadership team.
- Ensures prudent utilization of all cost-related resources used by nursing while assuring patient safety and adequate allocation for nursing care.
- Supports the integration of nursing information systems into the Hospital’s overall information system.
- Assures a safe environment for patients and personnel, monitoring and addressing potential safety hazards.
- Implements processes for formulating and updating policies and procedures, assessing and monitoring documentation compliance, and ensuring timely availability of equipment and supplies.
- Investigates unusual employee/patient incidents, documenting, reporting, and initiating corrective actions in a timely manner.
- Evaluates and monitors follow-up of identified problem areas.
- Ensures an overall plan for orientation and staff development for clinical and management/administrative staff.
- Seeks opportunities for cooperative efforts with other departments, disciplines, and agencies.
- Supports jointly sponsored continuing education programs or research activities among departments, other hospitals, colleges, universities, and industry.
- Supports nursing and allied health programs to utilize the Hospital for student clinical rotations.
- Promotes self-growth through attendance at seminars, advanced education, and healthcare journals/publications.
- Networks with internal and external professional colleagues to brainstorm, problem-solve, and share ideas.
- Performs other related job duties as requested.
Requirements
- Master’s degree in a relevant field of healthcare.
- Current State of Michigan Registered Nurse license.
- Minimum of five years of progressive experience in nursing leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
- Ten or more years of prior work experience in recent nursing experience.
