Vice President of Philanthropy
The Moran Company is partnering with Crazy Horse Memorial Foundation to recruit a Vice President of Philanthropy for this nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving the cultures, traditions, and living heritage of North American Indians. The Foundation operates the Indian Museum of North America®, the Native American Educational and Cultural Center®, and Crazy Horse Memorial University®, welcoming hundreds of thousands of visitors annually to its campus in the Black Hills of southwestern South Dakota.
About the role
Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President of Philanthropy will build and lead a modern, high-performing fundraising program to advance the Mountain Carving, expand the Museum’s collection, and support Crazy Horse Memorial University®. The role oversees a development team of 8–10 professionals and drives an annual fundraising goal of $10 million and beyond, covering annual, major, corporate, foundation, and legacy giving. Responsibilities include strengthening the major gift pipeline, developing planned giving, establishing clear metrics and moves management, preparing for the next capital campaign, and fostering a collaborative team culture.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Foundation’s multi-year fundraising strategy and expand the donor base.
- Personally cultivate and solicit major donors, secure significant gifts, and strengthen stewardship.
- Build and develop a planned giving program.
- Manage and develop a team of approximately 8–10 staff, establishing clear expectations and accountability.
- Oversee fundraising metrics, CRM effectiveness, budgeting, and revenue forecasting.
- Partner with Marketing to refine the case for support.
- Represent the Foundation with donors, tribal partners, and community leaders.
- Prepare the organization for its next capital campaign.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree.
- 7–15 years of progressive nonprofit fundraising experience, including at least five years in senior leadership.
- Proven record of securing major gifts, grants, and increasing fundraising results.
- Experience leading and developing fundraising teams, managing donor pipelines, and running campaigns.
- Proficiency with donor management systems.
- Strong communication, budgeting, planning, and relationship-building skills.
- Cultural humility and authentic passion for the Foundation’s mission.
- Ability to work effectively with donors, Board members, founding family members, tribal partners, and community leaders.

Pay
Approximately $150,000, commensurate with experience.
Schedule
Full-time, on-site in Crazy Horse, South Dakota, with some travel required for donor meetings and outreach. Relocation assistance may be available.
