Veterinary Student Externship- Mid Island Animal Hospital
United Veterinary Care offers veterinary students externships across a network of over 100 hospital locations in more than 20 states. This clinical experience allows you to apply classroom knowledge in a real-world setting, tailored to your goals. Externships are designed for clinical-year students at AVMA-accredited schools, integrating you into case discussions, collaborative problem-solving, and hands-on patient care in general practice, emergency, and specialty settings. Stipends are available to offset travel and lodging costs (unless prohibited by your veterinary school).
Eligibility
- Current veterinary student at an AVMA-accredited veterinary school
- Priority scheduling for students in clinical years on official externship blocks for school credit
- Proof of professional liability insurance required (SAVMA members qualify for no-cost insurance via AVMA PLIT)

Externship Experience
During your externship, you will actively participate in cases to further your development toward becoming a veterinarian. You will be supervised by experienced veterinarians and skilled support staff and included in:
- Surgical cases
- Dental procedures
- Emergency care
- Sick patient workups
- Routine medical appointments
You will discuss cases with your supervising veterinarian, who will confirm your exam findings and guide your plans before proceeding as a team. The hospital values new graduates and externs for the fresh perspectives and shared knowledge they bring.
