Veterinary Preceptorship Program at The Wilds
About the role
The Wilds is a nonprofit organization dedicated to connecting people and wildlife through leadership and inspiration. The preceptorship program offers veterinary students hands-on experience with large herds and mid-sized carnivores under the guidance of experienced veterinarians and animal management staff.
Responsibilities
- Assist with chemical restraint, drug calculations, and administration
- Work with medical records (ZIMS)
- Participate in post mortem examinations
- Gain proficiency with in-house laboratory procedures
- Assist with routine duties such as clinic upkeep
- Prepare and present an oral report upon completion of the preceptorship
- Engage in current research projects with approval
Requirements
- Final year veterinary student enrolled in an AVMA-COE accredited program
- Knowledge of exotic animals and their medicine
- Excellent communication skills (verbal and written)
- Flexible schedule: Monday-Friday 8 am-5 pm, up to 60 hours/week
- Adherence to standard operating procedures, including safety and biosecurity protocols
- Proof of medical and driving insurance, negative tuberculosis screening, and current rabies titer
- Compliance with The Wilds drug-free workplace policy
- Pass a successful criminal history background check
Qualifications
Selected preceptors will demonstrate strong academic performance and a commitment to conservation and animal welfare.
Skills
Strong interpersonal and problem-solving skills, ability to work independently and collaboratively, attention to detail, and adaptability are essential.

On-site paid housing is provided, and the RISE Scholarship is available for eligible interns to support their internship experience.
