Veterinary Hospitalist (Emergency and Critical Care)

About the role

We are seeking a dedicated Veterinary Hospitalist to lead the care of hospitalized and ICU patients in a 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital. This position involves managing complex cases, providing continuity of care, and supporting emergency clinicians with critical patient management. Ideal candidates have extensive experience in emergency veterinary medicine, particularly in critical care, and possess strong communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead primary case management for hospitalized and ICU patients, including diagnostics, treatment plans, and discharges.
• Manage critically ill patients with conditions like shock, sepsis, trauma, and toxicities.
• Oversee advanced therapies such as transfusions, oxygen therapy, and nutritional support.
• Communicate regularly with clients regarding patient progress and prognosis.
• Coordinate with referring veterinarians and specialists, and serve as a resource for ER doctors on critical cases.
• Mentor and train veterinary staff and contribute to hospital protocols and standards.
• Maintain accurate medical records and ensure high-quality patient care.

Qualifications

• DVM or VMD from an AVMA-accredited institution or equivalent.
• Active veterinary license or eligibility in the state.
• Minimum of 3+ years in emergency practice with experience managing critical patients.
• Strong client communication skills, especially in high-stakes situations.
• Leadership ability within a team environment.
• Diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care (DACVECC) or ECC residency-trained.
• Experience mentoring colleagues and developing ICU protocols.
