Veterinary Assistant

Responsibilities
- Greet clients and patients arriving for appointments and escort them into an exam room
- Obtain and record weight and vital signs (temperature, pulse, respirations) in the electronic medical record
- Collect thorough patient histories and document visits in the EMR
- Absorb and follow instructions from veterinarians and veterinary technicians regarding appointments, surgeries, dentistry, and euthanasia
- Assist with patient restraint, collection of laboratory samples, handling and dispensing of medications, and preparation for surgical and dental procedures
- Monitor patients during recovery and prepare them for hospital discharge or transfer to an overnight care facility
- Perform in-hospital treatments such as giving injectable and oral medications, intravenous fluid therapy, keeping patients clean, watered, and fed (when indicated)
- Prepare patients for surgical and dental procedures and assist with anesthesia
- Help train new staff members and disseminate knowledge as required
- Keep the hospital environment neat and clean, performing regular cleaning based on necessity and a pre-determined maintenance schedule
Requirements
- At least 1-year previous experience working in veterinary practice or sufficient relatable animal care experience
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills
- Careful and sympathetic attitude, maintaining a professional demeanor during emotional and stressful situations
- Telephone and computer skills
- Willingness to learn new techniques and treatments, offer creative ideas, and accept change
Qualifications
- Ability to perform tasks with or without reasonable accommodation
- Ability to work in a fast-paced environment
- Ability to lift up to 30 pounds as necessary
- Ability to stand for long periods of time
