Veterinarian (DVM) – Substitute Instructor

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Classroom & Lab Coverage: Step in to deliver scheduled lectures, execute established lesson plans, and conduct practical clinical demonstrations in lab settings.
  • Competency Assessment: Monitor and assess student progress during hands-on labs, signing off on skill-level checklists and lab competencies.
  • Academic Support: Mentor students individually during coverage shifts to support their clinical skill development and ensure learning objectives are met.
  • Safety Enforcement: Enforce all strict safety, OSHA, and sanitation protocols in the classroom, laboratory, and animal handling environments.
  • Medical Care & Compliance (As Needed During Coverage): Serve as the temporary "Attending Veterinarian" for the program's animals when covering primary faculty shifts.
  • Patient Oversight: Make necessary medical decisions for program patients during assignment, including diagnosing conditions, performing surgical/medical procedures, and developing treatment plans.
  • Diagnostics & Records: Order, perform, and interpret diagnostic tests; ensure all medical records updated during your shift fully comply with AVMA, USDA, and IACUC standards.
  • Controlled Substances: Assist in maintaining full compliance with DEA licensing standards and meticulously document any controlled substance log entries during coverage.
  • Program Administration Record Keeping: Maintain accurate, timely, and confidential student records for covered sessions, including daily attendance and grades.
  • Collaboration: Communicate effectively with the primary program faculty, Program Director, or campus leadership regarding student performance, attendance concerns, or lab supply needs.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Education: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM or VMD) degree from an accredited institution.
  • Licensure: Current and active state licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the State of Colorado.
  • Experience: Minimum of three (3) years of experience as a practicing veterinarian in a clinical, hospital, or shelter environment.
  • Communication: Exceptional verbal and written communication skills to adapt quickly to different classroom environments.
  • Technical Skills: Proficiency in basic computer applications (MS Office) and visual presentation tools.

Physical Requirements & Work Environment

  • Physical Demands: Must be able to safely demonstrate proper physical techniques for lifting, handling, and restraining animals of various sizes.
  • Environment: Work is performed in classroom, laboratory, and office settings. Routine exposure to biohazardous materials (e.g., blood, feces, urine) is required. Outdoor work in various weather conditions may be necessary for large animal enclosure exposure.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Hiring Range: $45.39 – $56.74 per hour.
