About the role

The Veterans' Service Office, within the Department of Social Services, seeks a Veterans' Services Representative I. Incumbents interview, advise, and assist veterans and their dependents in making entitlement determinations, as well as securing rights and benefits under federal, state, or local legislation. This role may require working shifts, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities

  • Interview veterans and their dependents to determine eligibility for benefits.
  • Provide advice and assistance in securing rights and benefits under applicable legislation.
  • Prepare and assist with claims and appeals.
  • Research and analyze applicable laws, policies, and programs.

Requirements

Applicants must meet one of the following options:

  • Option 1 (Education): Completion of sixty (60) semester units of coursework from an accredited U.S. college or university. If education was completed outside the U.S., documentation of comparability must be provided by the closing date.
  • Option 2 (Experience): Four (4) years of full-time, paid work experience providing eligibility services to clients of federal, state, or local programs, including claim preparation, appeal assistance, and research/analysis of applicable laws, policies, and programs.

Additional requirements:

  • Possession of a valid driver's license may be required.
  • As a condition of employment, the incumbent must obtain and maintain United States Department of Veterans Affairs (USDVA) accreditation through the California Department of Veterans Affairs (CDVA) within the twelve (12) month probationary period.
  • Candidates must undergo and pass a background investigation, which may include employment/credit histories, verification of education, arrest/criminal records, drug/alcohol use, and personal conduct.

Physical Demands

This position is classified under Medical Group I - Light Physical Activity. Duties include light physical effort such as lifting small, light objects, and may involve bending, stooping, squatting, twisting, and reaching. Considerable walking or standing may be required.
