About the role

Under direction of the Fire Lieutenant or above, the Vallen Firefighter performs a wide variety of administrative and technical tasks in support of fire suppression, fire prevention, hazardous materials, emergency medical, and other emergency services. Firefighters inspect, test, maintain, and repair Life Safety Equipment including fire extinguishers, hoses, monitors, and respirators (SCBA), and provide appropriate documentation to ensure accurate testing and repair.

Responsibilities

  • Respond to emergency and non-emergency incidents; provide services including emergency rescue, fire suppression, search and rescue, and emergency medical/first aid; prepare incident reports as assigned.
  • Participate in fire prevention operations, training, fire investigations, equipment operation and maintenance, and emergency response activities (natural disasters, hazardous materials incidents).
  • Identify, isolate, and contain hazardous materials safely and effectively.
  • Maintain fire station, equipment, and apparatus to ensure constant readiness.
  • Respond to hazardous materials incidents.
  • Perform inspection, testing, and maintenance of emergency response equipment and installed life safety systems in accordance with Vallen and customer SOPs.
  • Maintain emergency vehicle equipment logs and track EMS supplies/inventory; report supply levels to the Fire Lieutenant.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • High School diploma or GED required; Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred, or 6+ years of applicable direct experience with 5+ current certifications (manufacturer/state) in fire protection or related field.
  • Required certifications/experience:
    • Firefighter I, IFSAC/ProBoard, or NFPA 1081 equivalent
    • Emergency Medical Responder (EMR)
    • CPR & AED
    • Hazardous Materials Technician
    • Rope Rescue Training
    • Confined Space Training
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend English.

Work Environment

Physical Demands

  • Regularly required to talk and hear; frequently required to sit, stand, and walk.
  • Must walk at a regular pace for up to 15 continuous minutes and work from a standing position for 8–10 hours.
  • Must bend, climb, and stoop as needed for equipment access, repair, and service.
  • May occasionally lift and/or move up to 55 pounds.
  • Must climb stairwells up to 15 feet high and ascend/descend ladders (step, extension, case) up to 24 feet high.
  • Requires close vision and ability to adjust focus.
