About the role
Obtain, inspect, transport, load, and unload vehicles onto rail cars in a safe and efficient manner. This is a physically demanding, outdoor position that requires working in tight spaces, climbing ladders, and lifting bridge plates.
Responsibilities
- Prepare rail car for loading
- Open/Close rail car doors
- Raise and lower rail car decks
- Operate loading ramp and position correctly for safe vehicle entry
- Properly set rail car bridge plates in place
- Shuttle vehicles onto the rail cars
- Check vehicles for damage and report damage or miss bays to lead, supervisor, or manager
- Drive customer vehicles onto rail cars from staging lines in a safe and efficient manner
- Secure vehicles in the rail cars; apply chains or chocks as required by manufacturers
- Walk the deck to verify vehicles are properly loaded and secured
- Perform various duties as assigned to help the facility function in a team environment
- Adhere to all AWC and AAR safety standards
- Train new employees and temporary workers
Requirements
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record
- Ability to drive a manual transmission (stick shift) vehicle
- Ability to work outside 100 % of the time in all weather conditions
- Ability to stand, walk, and work at heights up to 15 feet above the ground
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds overhead and push, pull, or carry up to 85 pounds
- Good visual ability and sense of balance
- Knowledge of hand tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, ratchets, etc.)
- Ability to follow written and verbal directions and adhere to strict quality standards
- Ability to pass Safe Driving, Rail, and Buck Ramp quizzes with 80 % accuracy or better
Qualifications
- 6 months of work experience
- Experience working in a team environment (preferred)
Schedule
Primarily Monday–Friday, 7:00 am–3:30 pm. Some weekend work may be required due to vessel schedules.
