About the role

This full-time position (112 hours per pay period) is available for EMT-Basics, Paramedics, or Paramedics with Critical Care certification (CC). The role serves as a member of the ambulance crew, delivering patient care and safe transport for emergency and non-emergency situations. Paramedics assess and provide pre-hospital medical care and transportation for patients of all age groups, ensuring quality care through technical, educational, and quality improvement activities.

Responsibilities

  • Render patient care to the level of licensure and training consistent with Van Buren County Medical Control treatment protocol.
  • Complete all required paperwork (e.g., run sheets, billing sheets) before leaving shift each day.
  • Maintain current licensure and certifications as required by the corporation, State of Michigan, and Van Buren County Medical Control Board.
  • Provide direction to EMTs of lower licensure and seniority on ambulance calls and transports.
  • Report all incidents and/or accidents in writing in a timely fashion to the Crew Supervisor or General Manager.
  • Participate in community education and public service/public relations events as scheduled by VBEMS.
  • Complete daily duties upon arriving on shift and before leaving shift each day.
  • Perform routine and basic maintenance of the building and grounds as scheduled and/or assigned.
  • Attend monthly Run Reviews conducted by the Van Buren County Medical Control Authority.
  • Attend VBEMS company meetings 75% of the time.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Completion of State of Michigan approved EMT-Basic or Paramedic program.
  • Completion of clinical time required by EMT or Paramedic training program and a minimum of an additional 40 hours ride time with VBEMS, Inc after hire.
  • Current State of Michigan Emergency Medical Technician Licensure in good standing at the EMT-Basic or Paramedic Level.
  • Valid State of Michigan Driver’s License with a good driving record (no convictions and no more than 6 points in the past 2 years).
  • Ability to read and write in English; legible handwriting.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is desirable.
  • Demonstrates tact and good judgment; ability to work under pressure in difficult situations.
  • Mental ability to quickly assess scenes and patients, making decisions regarding resources and level of medical care needed.
  • Regularly lift weights up to 100 pounds and occasionally assist with heavier tasks.
  • Full-time Paramedics must obtain CCEMTP certification within a designated timeframe projected by the Operations Manager.

EMT-Basic Scope of Practice

  • Functions as a crew member on a BLS, LALS, or ALS ambulance.
  • Provides BLS care as defined by VBMCA protocols.
  • Functions as a second provider on an LALS vehicle under the direction of an AEMT or higher, or as a Paramedic II on an ALS vehicle.
  • Complete an agency orientation approved by VBMCA.
  • Successful completion of a VBMCA-approved field-training program.
  • Credentialing requirements as defined by VBCMCA.
  • Must complete 30 contacts to reach EMT Level I.

Paramedic in Training Scope of Practice

  • Functions as a crew member on a BLS, LALS, or ALS ambulance.
  • While partnered with a Paramedic Field Instructor (PFI), functions within the parameters of the field-training program.
  • May provide paramedic-level care at the discretion and under the supervision of a VBMCA-approved PFI.
  • In the absence of a PFI, functions at the EMT level.
  • Successful completion of a VBMCA-approved field-training program.
  • Minimum 50 ALS patient contacts.
  • All required certification and training requirements completed as outlined in the Van Buren Pre-hospital Care Credentialing Protocol.
  • Completed Protocol Test with a passing score of 85% (closed book).
  • All time requirements and/or shifts must be met; FTE workbook must be completed and signed by assigned Field Trainer and Education Coordinator.
  • Perform a mega code in the presence of the VBCMCA (or their designee) to their satisfaction.

Paramedic I Scope of Practice

  • Successfully completed a VBMCA-approved field-training program.
  • Functions as a paramedic in the VBMCA EMS system in accordance with VBMCA protocols.
  • Must be partnered with a Paramedic I or higher credentialed provider on an ALS ambulance.
  • Current licensure, certifications, and competencies as described in VBCMCA Protocols.

Paramedic II Scope of Practice

  • Functions independently as a paramedic in the VBMCA EMS system in accordance with VBMCA protocols.
  • May be partnered with an EMT or higher credentialed provider on an ALS ambulance.
  • Current licensure, certifications, and competencies as described in VBCMCA Protocols.

Paramedic II – Critical Care

  • Includes all Paramedic II requirements.
  • Must have and maintain Critical Care training.

Schedule

Full-time position with 56 scheduled weekly hours. Shift times are variable.
