Responsibilities

  • Operates Department vehicles, providing passengers with timely, reliable, and safe transportation (buses, vans, paratransit vans for handicapped passengers, and other vehicles in the Department inventory).
  • Collects fares and/or checks passes or transportation vouchers.
  • Conducts pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections, including fuel and fluid levels, tires, and mechanical problems or damage.
  • Assists passengers on and off the vehicle, including operating wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
  • Answers passenger questions regarding fares, routes, schedules, transfers, and maps to promote a positive experience.
  • Maintains order in the vehicle and ensures compliance with safety practices.
  • Maintains route logs, reports, and documentation.
  • Performs duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements required.
  • One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience preferred.
  • An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Skills & Knowledge

  • Knowledge of:
    • Methods, techniques, and objectives of operating all vehicles in the Department inventory.
    • Transit routes, schedules, fares, and related passenger information.
    • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and other applicable federal, state, and local statutes and regulations for public transportation.
    • Federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies regarding safe work practices for operating public transportation vehicles.
    • State, local, and other applicable traffic and vehicle safety codes and regulations.
    • Operation of a personal computer and job-related software applications.
  • Skill and Ability to:
    • Operate all vehicles in the Department inventory safely and reliably.
    • Perform safety and damage inspections and report potential problems.
    • Assist passengers, including operating wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
    • Operate a personal computer and two-way radio.
    • Read and interpret maps, schedules, technical manuals, and diagrams.
    • Maintain route records, logs, and documentation.
    • Maintain a professional demeanor and communicate effectively in English.
    • Complete assignments in a timely manner and comply with rules, policies, and regulations.
    • Perform duties in accordance with City policies and procedures for personal and public safety.

Physical Requirements

  • Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands to handle materials, manipulate tools, keyboard, reach with hands and arms, and operate a motor vehicle or job-related equipment.
  • Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.
  • Sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform essential functions and interact with the public.
