Variable Hour Transit Driver (American Falls)

Part-time Transit Driver position operating Transit Department vehicles on fixed routes or providing door-to-door transportation for eligible patrons. Requires safe driving skills and exceptional customer service to ensure timely, reliable, and safe passenger service.

Responsibilities

• Operates Department vehicles (buses, vans, paratransit vans) providing timely, reliable, and safe transportation.
• Collects fares and/or checks passes or transportation vouchers.
• Conducts pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections (fuel, fluids, tires, mechanical issues).
• Assists passengers on/off vehicles, including operating wheelchair lifts and securing wheelchairs.
• Answers passenger questions regarding fares, routes, schedules, transfers, and maps.
• Promotes positive passenger experience and maintains order in the vehicle.
• Maintains route logs, reports, and documentation.
• Performs duties in accordance with City policies, procedures, and safety practices.
• May be assigned additional duties in administration, dispatch, Medicaid dispatch, customer service, paratransit, ticketing, and freight operations.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Class B CDL with airbrake and passenger endorsements required.
• One (1) year of large vehicle driving experience preferred.
• Equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Knowledge of:
  • Operation of all vehicles in the Department inventory.
  • Transit routes, schedules, fares, and passenger information.
  • Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and applicable federal, state, and local transportation regulations.
  • Federal (OSHA) regulations and City policies for safe public transportation operations.
  • State, local, and other traffic and vehicle safety codes.
  • Operation of personal computers and job-related software.
• Skill and Ability to:
  • Operate all Department vehicles safely and reliably.
  • Perform safety and damage inspections; report issues to mechanics.
  • Assist passengers, including those with disabilities (wheelchair lifts, securing wheelchairs).
  • Operate a two-way radio and personal computer.
  • Read and interpret maps, schedules, technical manuals, and diagrams.
  • Maintain route records, logs, and documentation.
  • Communicate effectively in English for job performance.
  • Complete assignments timely and comply with rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Maintain professional demeanor and prioritize personal and public safety.

Physical Requirements

• Frequently required to stand, walk, sit, stoop, kneel, bend, use hands, reach with arms, and operate vehicles/equipment.
• Occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds with assistance.
• Requires sufficient visual acuity and hearing capacity to perform essential duties.

Work Environment

• Work primarily in Department vehicles and shop environments.
• Exposure to weather conditions and traffic hazards.
• Moderate noise levels.
• Maintains collaborative relationships with officials, employees, organizations, and the public.
