About the role

The Validated Pharmacy Technician (VPhT) is an advanced-level pharmacy technician with additional responsibility to conduct final product verification of select medications prepared by other pharmacy technicians under the Validated Pharmacy Technician/Tech-Check-Tech (TCT) program. The VPhT works as part of the pharmacy patient care team and under the general supervision of pharmacists but may independently perform product verification in accordance with the Code of Maryland Regulations (COMAR 10.34.34.04) and UMMC departmental policies.

Responsibilities

  • Understand the duties of Pharmacy Technician I, II, and III, including medication preparation, compounding, distribution, inventory management, and technology utilization.
  • Conduct final product verification of unit-dose and unit-of-use medications prepared by other pharmacy technicians, ensuring accuracy in:
    • Product selection (right drug, strength, and dosage form)
    • Correct dispense quantity (according to order)
    • Product integrity (unopened, undamaged, not expired)
  • Conduct final product verification of eligible medications for patient-specific dispensing and automated dispensing cabinet (ADC) stocking/restocking.
  • Comply with all ongoing audits, training, and recertification requirements.
  • Demonstrate 99% or greater product verification accuracy.
  • Document and report verification activities, audit results, and any product verification errors in accordance with department product verification policy.
  • Participate in the training and mentoring of pharmacy technicians pursuing VPhT competency.
  • Support pharmacist-led patient care activities.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Graduation or equivalent.
  • Active Maryland Pharmacy Technician Registration.
  • Active Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) credential issued by a board-approved national program (e.g., PTCB).
  • Active Product Verification (VPhT) Certification issued by a board-approved program (e.g., PTCB Technician Product Verification Certificate).
  • Completion of UMMC’s or UMMS equivalent VPhT/TCT training program.
  • Minimum 1-year full-time inpatient pharmacy technician experience at UMMS.

Qualifications (Preferred)

  • 2+ years of inpatient pharmacy experience.
  • Associates degree or equivalent.
