Vacante: Postdoctoral Researcher for Digital Humanities and Hispanic Studies – Radboud University

Last May, Prince Carlos de Bourbon de Parme handed over his family archive to Radboud University. This extensive collection offers new perspectives on Spanish and European history. The Faculty of Arts is looking for a postdoctoral researcher to collaborate on the Bourbon de Parme family archive, recently donated to the university’s Catholic Documentation Centre (KDC).

About the role

As a postdoctoral researcher, you will conduct research on the Bourbon de Parme family archive, which consists of five cubic metres or 60 linear metres of documents mainly from the 19th and 20th centuries. The archive is written mostly in Spanish, but also in French, Italian, German, and Latin. It contains:

• Personal correspondence between members of the Bourbon de Parme family
• Diaries and notes from its principal representatives
• Important documents from the Partido Carlista
• Approximately 20,000 photographs taken by María de las Nieves de Braganza during her travels around the world at the beginning of the 20th century

Your work will be embedded in the Radboud Institute for Culture and History (RICH) and the department of Modern Languages and Cultures (MTC). Priority will be given to the exploration of the photographic collection and the diaries and notes linked to it.

Responsibilities

• Carry out your own research related to the materials in the archive, using digital humanities methods, and publish findings in relevant international journals
• Promote the collection through lectures, symposia, and other public engagements
• Guide the archivist (to be appointed) in the digitisation and archiving of the material
• Participate in one of RICH’s research groups and contribute to the institute’s activities
• Set up research collaborations with current staff of the research institute
• Publish research in highly qualified journals, conference proceedings, or edited volumes
• Teach a limited number of courses in Bachelor’s and/or Master’s programmes (approximately 20% of your appointment)

Requirements

• Hold a PhD in a relevant field
• Demonstrable expertise in digital humanities and/or visual culture
• Expertise in Spanish political history, tourism studies, or gender studies is recommended
• Track record of international high-profile scholarly publications
• Proven ability to attract external research funding
• Administrative and organisational skills
• Hold a Cambridge Certificate (CPE2 level) in English or equivalent, or commit to obtaining this certificate within six months
• Speak and read Spanish fluently; knowledge of French, German, Italian, and Latin is recommended
• Willingness to live in the Netherlands during the contract period

• Gross monthly salary between €3,974 and €5,439 based on a 38-hour working week, depending on previous education and relevant work experience (salary scale 11)
