About the role

The Faculty of Theology at the University of Göttingen is seeking to fill a temporary W1 Professorship with tenure track to W2 in Jewish Studies (Judaistik), starting April 1, 2024. The successful applicant will initially be appointed for three years. If the interim evaluation is positive, the employment contract will be extended for another three years. Transfer to a permanent W2 professorship will occur after another positive evaluation without re-advertisement.

The position requires covering the entire field of Jewish Studies in research and teaching, exploring the diversity of Jewish religious culture and tradition from antiquity to today, with a focus on original source languages. Special emphasis should be given to Jewish-Christian interrelations.

Responsibilities

  • Participate in research projects within the faculty, interdisciplinary research, and centers at the University of Göttingen, such as the prospective Centre for Antiquity, the Middle Ages and Early Modern Times (ZAMF) and the Forum for Interdisciplinary Religious Studies (FIRSt).
  • Commit to raising external research funds (Drittmittel).
  • Actively engage in academic self-governance.
  • Teach in all programs offered by the faculty (primarily in German, with some courses in English) and in relevant study programs of the Faculty of Humanities (e.g., Ancient Cultures and Religious Studies).
  • Engage in research-led teaching and continuously develop pedagogical approaches.

Requirements

  • Excellent dissertation in the field of Jewish Studies.
  • Further high-ranking activities in academic research and teaching.
  • Experience in acquiring external research funds (Drittmittel) is desirable.
