Utility Worker

About the role

This is an entry-level position that provides on-the-job training for servicing, maintaining, inspecting, troubleshooting, and repairing rail equipment in compliance with federal and state regulatory requirements and company policies.

Responsibilities

• Service, maintain, inspect, troubleshoot, and repair rail equipment.
• Accurately complete equipment inspection, work order, and other required forms in a timely manner.
• Repair, replace, and test machinery, components, and systems related to rail equipment, including mechanical, electro-mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic activities.
• Work with car and locomotive systems, sub-systems, and components of rail rolling stock.
• Perform standard maintenance tasks, including mechanical, electrical, and electro-pneumatic tasks on both car and locomotive.
• Conduct inspections and cleaning, including servicing restrooms as required.
• Use related hand tools such as pneumatic, electrical, hydraulic, and measuring instruments.
• Clean and maintain work area, tools, and shop equipment.
• Maintain qualifications to support service or maintenance in the shop and yard.
• Participate in and successfully complete required ongoing training, including periodic written, oral, and hands-on testing.
• Report to work at scheduled times with regular attendance and punctuality.

• Perform other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Completion of technical school or apprenticeship program preferred.
• Experience in troubleshooting, repair, replacement, or rebuilding mechanical equipment and systems.
• Welding and cutting experience preferred.
• Experience in the maintenance of railroad equipment preferred.
• Knowledge of mechanical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
• Ability to read mechanical drawings.
• Ability to read and troubleshoot with electrical schematics is preferred.
• HVAC Clean Air Act Type II, III, or Universal certification is highly desirable.
• Knowledge and skill in the use of electrical tools, equipment, and measurements to meet established standards.
• Basic computer skills.
• Ability to read, write, and communicate proficiently.

Pre-Employment Requirements

• Subject to pre-employment background check and motor vehicle report review.
• Subject to pre-employment physical, medical evaluation, and drug screen due to the safety-sensitive nature of this position.
• Successfully complete and maintain any required safety certification and testing on an annual basis.

Physical Requirements

• Regularly lift weight up to 75 pounds to a height of up to 56 inches.
• Regularly carry weight up to 75 pounds for a distance up to 100 feet.
• Regularly push/pull up to 50 pounds for a distance up to 50 feet.
• Regularly grasp or squeeze with forces up to 40 pounds.
• Regularly ascend and descend a 10-step ladder with up to 25 pounds.
• Frequently climb on/off equipment.
• Work in confined spaces with a height of 12 inches and a width of 24 inches.
• Regularly kneel, bend, squat while transferring up to 25 pounds of weight.
• Regularly sit and stand for extended periods of time.
• Able to walk on uneven surfaces up to 1 mile.
• Regularly lay on back for extended periods of time.
• Regularly reach overhead while holding tools.
• Must be aware of surroundings and follow verbal commands while exposed to moderately loud noises daily.
• Must adapt to various temperature extremes including heat, cold, moisture, and wind.
• Must work in a safety-sensitive environment.
• Must pass color/vision examinations as required by the position.
• Must hear and distinguish auditory signals as required by the position.
