Position Overview
The Utility Project Engineer - Substation Design role focuses on primary (outdoor) physical substation design, supporting both utility and renewable energy projects, including grid interconnections.
Responsibilities
- Lead and support substation physical design for high-voltage T&D systems
- Develop and review: Single line diagrams (SLDs), substation plan and elevation drawings, general arrangement and layout drawings, equipment erection and construction drawings
- Design and layout: High voltage bus systems, cable routing, conduit, and wiring systems, grounding systems and auxiliary power, control building layouts
- Ensure designs align with utility requirements and grid interconnection standards
- Apply and interpret IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards in all designs
- Support both AIS (Air Insulated Substations) and GIS (Gas Insulated Substations) applications
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams including engineering, project management, and field personnel
- Review and validate engineering deliverables for accuracy and quality
- Provide technical guidance and oversight as needed
Requirements/Skills
- Minimum 4+ years of experience in Transmission and Distribution (T&D) substation engineering
- Proven experience supporting utility-scale substation projects (PG&E experience strongly preferred)
- Hands-on experience with substation physical design and drawing development
- Strong knowledge of: High voltage substation systems (69kV–500kV+), North American standards: IEEE, ANSI, NEC, and NESC, utility requirements and grid codes
- Experience with both AIS and GIS substations
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (BSEE preferred)
- PE or obtaining PE
