Position Details

This position is governed by the AFSCME collective bargaining agreement and will start at Grade 18, Step 7: $2,957.21 biweekly ($76,887.46 annually), with step increases awarded annually on the anniversary date of hire.

Shift: 2:00 PM – 10:00 PM, Monday – Friday

Reports to: Assistant Director of Trades and the Director of Facilities

Responsibilities

• Test, repair, install, and maintain various types of electrical systems and equipment
• Troubleshoot electrical and related equipment using necessary equipment and reading schematics, diagrams, and outlines to identify and correct operational problems
• Maintain adequate inventory of equipment and materials by contacting vendors for pricing and ordering
• Inspect work of outside contractors to ensure compliance with agency safety codes and regulations
• Determine on-the-job procedure changes by consulting with tradespeople, private utilities, outside contractors, and engineers
• Determine acceptable quality of materials and equipment necessary for a job to ensure compliance with specifications
• Write technical specifications for equipment purchases
• Attend meetings, seminars, and workshops to exchange information
• Maintain reports such as time and production, repair, vacation, attendance, and cost analysis
• Interview prospective employees
• Review technical literature to stay current with developments in the field
• Reset fire alarm systems
• Decide when to kill main electrical power supply in an emergency
• Set up, break down, and move staging
• Draft schematics, diagrams, and outlines
• Provide on-the-job training

Required Qualifications

• At least two years of full-time, or equivalent part-time, experience as a licensed journeyman or master electrician
• Possession of a current and valid Massachusetts Journeyman or Master Electrician's License issued by the State Examiners of Electricians
• Knowledge of state and local electrical codes
• Knowledge of the principles and theory of electricity
• Knowledge of basic algebra and arithmetic
• Knowledge of types and uses of small hand tools (pliers, screwdrivers, etc.), hand held power tools (drills, etc.), and testing equipment used in electrical work
• Knowledge of safety practices and precautions in the electrical trade
• Knowledge of inspection techniques used in the electrical trade
• Skill in using small hand tools, precision measuring equipment, gauges, instrumentation, and hand held power tools
• Ability to lift and carry heavy objects
• Ability to understand, explain, and apply laws, rules, and regulations governing assigned unit activities
• Ability to lead a group of workers
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions
• Ability to interpret and apply laws, rules, and regulations concerning electrical practice
• Ability to write clearly and concisely and maintain accurate records
• Ability to prepare and use charts, graphs, and tables
• Ability to establish and maintain harmonious working relationships with others
• Ability to perform arithmetical computations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division) and algebraic calculations to determine voltage, amperage, and resistance factors
• Ability to read and interpret electrical plans, schematics, drawings, and documents
• Ability to make decisions and act quickly in emergency situations
• Ability to climb and work from ladders and scaffolds
• Ability to install, maintain, and repair electrical wiring systems and equipment
• Ability to detect and locate causes of electrical failure or breakdown of equipment
• Ability to work with the tools, materials, and equipment of the electrical trade
• Manual dexterity and mechanical aptitude
• Based on assignment: knowledge of methods and techniques of testing fire alarm systems; knowledge of procedures and methods followed in installation of fire alarm systems; ability to operate a motor vehicle; ability to supervise (planning, assigning, controlling work, determining training needs, motivating subordinates, and determining need for disciplinary action)
