Utility Plant Operator 1
About the role
This is an essential position. During heating season, the Utility Plant Operator 1 works on a rotating 8-hour swing shift performing semi-skilled work in the operation of boilers and related equipment. Responsibilities include operating boilers, maintaining proper steam pressure and water levels, assisting in the operation of electric generation equipment, keeping records of steam production and fuel consumption, making minor adjustments and repairs, monitoring boiler plant systems, and operating small steam engines of low horsepower used to drive fans and related equipment.
Work is directed by a Utility Plant Operator 2 and supervised by a Utility Plant Supervisor or other trades supervisor, with performance reviewed for compliance with instructions, procedures, and safe operations.
Requirements
- 1 year as a Utility Plant Helper OR
- 1 year experience in cleaning and assisting in the operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems and related equipment OR
- A combination of experience and training in this field
- Demonstrated knowledge of the operation of boiler plant systems and related equipment
- Knowledge of utility plant hazards and safety procedures
- Effective oral and written communication skills
Preferred Qualifications
- 2 years’ experience operating a gas-fired steam plant
- 2 years’ experience as a Utility Plant Helper
- 2 years’ experience performing semi-skilled work in the operation, maintenance, and repair of industrial, commercial, or institutional boiler plant systems and related equipment
- Prior semi-skilled work in a higher education environment
Pay
Starting salary: $36,831.00 (based on the AFSCME Collective Bargaining Agreement).
Schedule
Rotating 8-hour swing shift during heating season.
Supplemental Information
This position may be eligible for a flexible hybrid work arrangement, permitting a combination of on-site and remote work, subject to applicable organizational policies, operational requirements, and supervisory approval.
A successful interview, reference checks, background clearances (PA Criminal, Child Abuse Clearance, and FBI Clearance), and demonstration of ability are required for employment.
