About the role

The City of Sunrise seeks a skilled individual to join our team in the Maintenance and Repair Department. This position involves challenging tasks in the municipal water and wastewater systems, requiring a combination of mechanical skills and problem-solving abilities.

Responsibilities

  • Performs mechanical work in installing, maintaining, modifying, and repairing the municipal distribution and collection system.
  • Enters work orders into the computer system.
  • Maintains and monitors assigned employees engaged in maintenance, repair, and adjustments to underground utilities.
  • Identifies and corrects more difficult and complex causes of system failures.
  • Assists in the preparation of sketches for system layouts and installation.
  • Orients, guides, and trains technical personnel in proper procedures and safe methods for performing work assignments.
  • Repairs and installs water mains, new services, fire hydrants, valves, and sanitary sewer pipes.
  • Locates valves, pipes, and blowouts in water mains to facilitate repairing water main breaks.
  • Checks/inspects filters, pumps, connections, oil levels, temperatures, etc.
  • Operates equipment incidental to completing assignments.
  • Installs new water meters and meter boxes and raises or lowers meter boxes.
  • Repairs shut off valves, sanitary pipes, and service line leaks.
  • Helps lay sod; repairs asphalt; and picks up supplies.
  • Answers customer complaints and responds to emergency calls.
  • Trains employees.
  • Performs related work as required.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Supplemental special courses in mechanical maintenance and repair preferred.
  • Considerable work experience in general mechanical equipment maintenance and repair.
  • Necessary Special Qualifications: Valid Florida commercial driver’s license, Class “B”, with endorsements for air brakes; obtain prior to hire; Registrations desired: Level 3 State of Florida Water Distribution License from FDEP in maintenance of distribution systems; Pre-employment and random drug testing as required and monitored by DOT 49 C.F.R. Part 382.
  • Physical Requirements: Use of sensory skills for communication and interaction; physical capability to effectively use and properly operate City assigned vehicles, manual or power tools, and other standard equipment; ability to perform various physical activities such as climbing, balancing, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, pushing and pulling, twisting, making repetitive hand movements; ability to walk, stand, and sit for prolonged periods; ability to work outdoors under varying temperatures, inclement weather, and/or other adverse conditions; ability to load, carry, lift, push and pull objects weighing up to 50 pounds; ability to operate a motorized vehicle; ability to climb and descend stairways and ship ladders at unusual heights of up to 40 feet; ability to hear within normal audio range, with or without correction; ability to see in the normal visual range with or without correction; ability to withstand exposure to excessive noise, unpleasant odors, chemicals, and bloodborne pathogens; ability to work at locations with exposure over, in and around water.

Schedule

Alternative Work Schedule with two three-day weekends per month through an every-other-Friday-off model.
