About the role
The City of Wilson seeks candidates for a Utility Locator I or II position. This role involves locating underground utilities before excavations and assisting with maintenance. The position offers competitive salaries ranging from $47,400.71 to $65,277.98 for Utility Locator I and $54,970.28 to $75,702.44 for Utility Locator II, depending on qualifications.
Responsibilities
- Utility Locator I:
- Locates gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber mains and services prior to excavations.
- Edits, reviews, and maintains gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber maps.
- Provides information to the public, city engineers, and city officials.
- Locates buried gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber service boxes.
- Reads and interprets North Carolina One Call communications.
- Inspects gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber lines damaged from digging.
- Affords assistance to service and maintenance crews.
- Utility Locator II:
- Locates gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber mains and services prior to excavations.
- Edits, reviews, and maintains gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber maps.
- Provides information to the public, city engineers, and city officials.
- Locates buried gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber service boxes.
- Reads and interprets North Carolina One Call communications.
- Inspects gas, electrical, water, sewer, and fiber lines damaged from digging.
- Acts as a team leader and supervisory liaison contact.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Knowledge and level of competency in specialized training in the field of work, plus basic skills from a high school education.
- Sufficient experience to understand subordinate positions and resolve problems.
- Valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina.
- Willingness to work overtime and adhere to a routine "on-call" schedule.
- Knowledge of underground utility operating equipment, city codes, and North Carolina regulations.
- Skills in interpreting maps, drawings, and GIS information, using a metal detector, laptop computer, planning, organizing, prioritizing work, performing mathematical computations, and communicating orally and in writing.
Supervisory/Management Responsibility
None.
