Utility Locator - Fairfax County, VA
About the Role
Utility locating technicians respond to utility marking requests (tickets) sent via the State One Call System (VA811) on behalf of utility customers. Technicians work independently throughout the day, interpreting facility records and using locating equipment to accurately mark the horizontal location of underground utilities. Daily interaction with homeowners, excavators, and utility personnel is required. Proper documentation of markings is entered into an online ticket management system. Technicians must adhere to company policies and customer regulations.
Work hours are typically 7 AM to 4 PM, Monday through Friday, with weekend and after-hours work required as needed. A 24-hour on-call rotation is part of the role.
Requirements
- Strong work ethic and ability to report to work daily
- Ability to take direction and complete paid training
- Acceptable driving record
- Pass a background check and pre-employment drug screening
- Able to work outside in all weather conditions
- Familiarity with computers and ability to navigate a file system
- Good reading comprehension, written, and oral communication skills
- Ability to prioritize work and meet daily deadlines
- Successfully complete in-house training program
- Able to walk on varying terrain, including roadside and construction areas
- Able to lift up to 50 lbs occasionally to access manholes and valve pits
This role is open to applicants who do not have a high school diploma/GED or college diploma. Military-experienced candidates are encouraged to apply.
Pay
Salary: $18.00 - $28.00 per hour, based on individual experience.
Bonus programs can increase earnings by up to $2,000 annually.

Schedule
Full-time position with typical start time at 7 AM and end time around 4 PM, Monday through Friday. Weekend and after-hours work may be required as needed.
