Utility Locator Overview

Viaero Fiber is seeking a Utility Locator to assist in the identification and marking of underground utility lines in the Columbus, Nebraska/Norfolk, Nebraska region. The role involves ensuring safe excavation practices through communication with contractors, clients, and office staff.

Responsibilities

• Utilize electromagnetic locators to identify and accurately mark the location of underground fiber optic lines.
• Take clear photos of markings and enter necessary notes into the system.
• Schedule and complete standbys with project managers.
• Follow driving directions from 811 One-Calls.
• Walk 3 to 5 miles a day, if needed, carrying equipment.
• Work in extreme outdoor weather conditions.
• Adapt to adverse situations and learn new devices and changing laws.
• Keep the supervisor/manager informed of any issues or problems in the field.
• Correctly, safely, and efficiently locate underground utilities.
• Thoroughly search for underground utilities in a designated area.
• Document utility locations accurately, including depth, type, and any relevant observations.
• Coordinate with project stakeholders to ensure safe excavation procedures.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, property owners, and project managers regarding utility locations and potential risks.
• Adhere to safety protocols and procedures, including wearing appropriate personal protective equipment and following industry standards.

Required Skills

• Proficient in operating various utility locating equipment.
• Proficient in computer skills.
• Ability to interpret and read utility maps, blueprints, and construction plans.
• Ability to maneuver Google Earth and other mapping functions.
• High level of accuracy and precision when marking utility locations and documenting information.
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, walk long distances, and work on construction sites.
• Able to bend and lift up to 50 lbs.
• Effective verbal and written communication skills.
• Valid driver's license with a clean MVR.
• Pass a drug screen.
• Pass a background check.
• Availability to be on call for evenings and weekends, including all holidays.
