Utility Locator

About the role

We are seeking a reliable and detail-oriented Utility Locator to join our Technical Consulting team. The Utility Locator will read blueprints and mark underground utility lines prior to excavation to ensure safety for workers, the public, and critical infrastructure. This role involves traveling between Ames and Des Moines, Iowa, and working in all weather conditions.

Responsibilities

• Use electromagnetic locating equipment and other technology to identify underground gas, electric, water, sewer, and fiber optic systems.
• Mark utility locations in accordance with industry standards and state regulations.
• Respond to excavation requests and complete locate tickets within the required timeframe.
• Interpret utility maps, drawings, GIS data, and construction plans.
• Maintain accurate records of locates, field notes, and completed work orders.
• Communicate effectively with contractors, homeowners, municipalities, and utility companies.
• Conduct field investigations to verify utility locations and resolve conflicts.
• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, safety standards, and One-Call requirements.
• Inspect and maintain company vehicles, tools, and locating equipment.
• Report damages to utilities, hazardous conditions, and safety concerns immediately.
• Maintain a legal driver’s license with an acceptable driving record.
• Work independently and manage daily workload.

Work Environment

• Overtime and on-call availability required.
• Travel throughout Ames and Des Moines; no overnights.
• Frequent walking, bending, and kneeling near roadways, construction sites, and utility corridors.
• Work in all weather conditions, including rain, hail, sleet, snow, heat, humidity, and dry environments.

Schedule

• Monday–Friday, 1st shift.
• Company car provided (must pick up and return vehicle to Ames, IA daily).

Pay

The pay range for this position is $20.00 – $25.00 per hour. Individual compensation within this range will depend on qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
