About the role
Provides skilled work and oversight associated with locating and marking City utility lines in order to minimize accidental damage or disruption of service due to construction activities.
Responsibilities
- Reads utility maps, as-builts, and blueprints to identify accurate locating and marking of utility lines with stakes, flags, and/or paint.
- Coordinates changes and corrections based on field observation with the Engineering Department.
- Maintains data integrity by communicating and coordinating changes based on operational changes in the field.
- Serves as a field arm for customer service representatives and assists in responding to customer inquiries.
- Supports and assists external customers by meeting with property owners, contractors, and developers to assist in locating utilities and explaining service locations and responsibilities.
- Meets with customers as required.
- Assists with emergency situations such as system breaks, locates affected areas, and erects safety barricades.
- Executes routine and emergency operational, maintenance, construction, and repair functions of infrastructure or equipment utilized in the water distribution division.
- Maintains the integrity of landscaping and completes work orders.
- Aids in the installation, maintenance, replacement, and repair of water mains, water service connections, fire hydrants, valves, and related appurtenances.
- Notifies customers of water service interruptions in accordance with Public Works policies and procedures.
- Operates, inspects, and maintains water distribution infrastructure; logs daily records; reads from meters, gauges, charts, and instruments; and detects mechanical or process deficiencies and communicates findings to the supervisor.
- Delivers outstanding customer service by establishing and maintaining open communication with all internal and external customers, including co-workers, contractors, residents, and other City departments.
- Informs immediate supervisor of daily operations, important developments, and work activities.
Requirements
- Formal Education/Knowledge: Equivalent to four years of high school.
- Experience: Minimum two years of experience in a related field.
- Certifications and Other Requirements: Valid Driver’s License required. Must obtain ADEQ Grade I Operator License in Distribution within the first 12 months of hire.
- Reading: Ability to read general correspondences, memorandums, and letters, technical training manuals for equipment operation.
- Math: Ability to perform general math calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, and fractions.
- Writing: Ability to write reports, general correspondences, memorandums, and letters.
- Managerial: No responsibility for the direction or supervision of others but may provide advice/direction to an employee with less experience/skill or tenure.
- Policies/Decision Making: Moderate - The employee normally performs the job by following established standard operating procedures and/or policies. There is a choice of the appropriate procedure or policy to apply to duties. More complex work as well as decisions with more significant impacts may be reviewed prior to being finalized.
- Technical Skills: Broad Application - Work requires a comprehensive, practical knowledge of a technical field with use of analytical judgment and decision-making abilities.
- Interpersonal/Human Relations Skills: High - In addition to the sharing of information, interactions at this level may also include providing advice to others outside direct reporting relationships on specific problems or general policies/procedures. In many of the interactions, contacts may require the consideration of different points of view to reach agreement. Elements of persuasion may be necessary to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas.
