About the role

Wire 3 is dedicated to providing affordable, high-speed, and high-bandwidth internet services to households in our local communities. The Utility Locator 1 plays a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of Wire 3’s construction and excavation projects by accurately identifying and marking the location of underground utilities. This role is the face of Wire 3 in the communities we serve, responsible for providing the best possible experience while working in and around public and private property. Using specialized detection equipment and technology, the Utility Locator 1 helps prevent costly damage and service interruptions, protecting both the public and the environment. This role requires close collaboration with contractors, engineers, construction crews, and local authorities to ensure compliance with regulations and best practices throughout Wire 3’s network build-out.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct field surveys to locate and mark underground utilities using advanced detection equipment in advance of excavation and construction activities
  • Interpret utility maps, as-builts, and construction plans to ensure accurate identification of underground utility lines
  • Communicate effectively with project stakeholders including construction crews, contractors, and local authorities to provide updates and address concerns regarding utility locations
  • Coordinate with the OSP Field Supervisor and Construction Manager to ensure utility locates are completed ahead of scheduled excavation and that crew workflow remains uninterrupted
  • Maintain detailed and accurate records of utility locations, field survey results, and locate tickets for future reference and compliance documentation
  • Adhere to all safety protocols, industry regulations, and Wire 3’s company safety programs to ensure a safe working environment for all crews
  • Respond promptly to locate requests and manage ticket queues in coordination with the construction schedule
  • Identify and report any discrepancies, conflicts, or unlocatable utilities to the appropriate construction or project management personnel
  • Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED required
  • Previous experience in utility locating, underground construction, or a related field preferred
  • Certification in utility locating (e.g., NULCA, APWA, or equivalent) preferred or willingness to obtain upon hire
  • Familiarity with GIS technology and utility management systems a plus
  • Experience working in construction or excavation environments preferred
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record required
  • Must be able to pass DOT drug and alcohol testing requirements per 49 CFR Part 382 and/or 49 CFR Part 199

Skills

  • Proficiency in using utility locating equipment including electromagnetic locators and ground-penetrating radar to accurately identify underground lines
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to interpret utility maps, construction drawings, and field data
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with construction crews, contractors, engineers, and local authorities
  • High attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records and ensure compliance with safety regulations and locate documentation requirements
  • Familiarity with GIS (Geographic Information Systems) technology preferred
  • Ability to manage and prioritize multiple locate tickets across active construction areas
  • Strong safety awareness and commitment to following all applicable field safety protocols

Physical Requirements

  • Work performed in an outdoor environment with regular exposure to outside weather conditions including rain, humidity, high temperatures, and high winds
  • The outdoor work environment will vary throughout the day including changes in terrain, traffic conditions, urban settings, and rural settings
  • Exposure to moderate to loud noise levels at active construction and excavation sites
  • Must be able to walk extensively, stand for prolonged periods, bend, and navigate varied and uneven terrain throughout the workday
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. as needed for field equipment
  • Must be able to operate a company vehicle and drive between job sites daily
