Utility Locate Technician II

About the role

The purpose of this classification is to perform skilled work associated with locating and marking County-owned utility lines in support of excavation and construction projects. Employees in this classification work independently under the supervision of a supervisor and are familiar with the use of various locating tools and technologies.

Responsibilities

• Captures and responds to Utility Protection Center (UPC) requests (Call Before You Dig).
• Reads and interprets utility maps/plans to identify the type and size of underground utilities.
• Visually inspects predefined construction to determine whether utilities could come into conflict with proposed excavation.
• Operates different electronic detection equipment to locate underground facilities within prescribed accuracy limits.
• Marks location, depth, and length of utility lines; takes photos; updates maps and computer databases; maintains related documentation.
• Responds to complaints and questions related to utility line locates; provides information, researches problems, and initiates problem resolution.
• Prepares, types, proofreads, and/or completes various forms, lists, directories, logs, notices, graphs, spreadsheets, or other documents.
• Communicates with department heads, county employees, contractors, and the public and outside businesses and agencies as needed to coordinate work activities, review status of work, exchange information, resolve problems, or give/receive advice/direction.

Requirements

• High school diploma or GED.
• One (1) year of experience in utility maintenance and/or locating.
• A valid Georgia Driver’s License.

• Comprehensive, current knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, policies, and procedures.
• Reads professional literature.
• Maintains professional affiliations.
• Attends workshops and training sessions as appropriate.

Skills

• Uses a variety of hand tools and equipment to perform assigned duties, including but not limited to manhole pick, pry bar, paint stick, paint, shovel, probe rod, measuring wheel, and metal detector.
• Coordinates the County’s response to Utility Protection Center (UPC) requests.
• Operates a personal computer, general office equipment, or other equipment as necessary to complete essential functions, to include the use of word processing, spreadsheet, database, or other system software.
