Utility Locate Technician
About the role
Lake Superior Consulting is growing and we are seeking Utility Locators to join our team! We are seeking both experienced locators and those with no experience, we will train!
Responsibilities
- Respond to locate requests within legal time limit
- Mark found utilities using proper coloring system (APWA marking standards)
- Read and interpret utility maps/prints to identify the size and type of underground utility
- Complete required paperwork for locates and line crossings/excavations
- Work safely by adhering to LSC and client guidelines and procedures
- Communicate work scopes and responsibilities amongst project specific field-based teams
- Complete and maintain operator qualifications (OQs)
- Operate and use electronic locating equipment
- Gather data, prepare records and reports in a timely manner
- Perform daily safety meetings and submit daily report documentations
- Generate and gather equipment for kickoffs of projects
- Ensure your work is utilized with respect to company goals
- Document and report any incidents, near misses, and opportunities for improvement
- Work in compliance with all technical procedures and guidelines
- Be available for on-call rotation
Requirements
- Due to our driver policy, must be 21 years of age or older
- A High School Diploma required
- Able and willing to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including extreme heat, cold, rain, and snow. Previous outdoor experience is a plus.
- Physical stamina to walk, bend, and lift up to 50 lbs. in challenging environments
- Available to work overtime and weekends as needed, handling the physical demands of extended hours.
- Availability to participate in on-call rotation
- Prior utility locating experience is a plus, but we are willing to train
- Valid driver’s license is required and a safe driving record
- Capability to operate a company vehicle and use general hand/power tools
- Comfortable working in confined spaces.
- Able to distinguish between colors used to identify wiring and mark underground utilities.
- Strong critical thinking, organizational, problem solving, and troubleshooting abilities
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written) to interact clearly with colleagues, customers, contractors, and homeowners.
- Commitment to working safely and producing high quality, ethical service
- Comfortable with utilizing a laptop, Microsoft Office programs and cell phone
Qualifications
- Ability to work in a physically demanding outdoor environment, as required
- Ability to traverse rugged terrain, excavations and work around pipe and equipment, as required
- Must be able to travel to offsite locations for extended periods of time
- Frequent periods of standing for long periods
- Occasional lifting of up to 50 lb.
- Exposure to all types of weather and terrain
- Ability to work long hours for extended periods, when projects demand
- Ability to sit at a desk and work with a computer for extended periods

Pay
The actual starting salary will be determined based on a variety of factors, including your skills, experience, and office/market location. The anticipated hourly range for this position is $21-25 per hour.
Schedule
This individual will be responsible for accurate locating and marking cables, pipes, and other conduits that carry utilities underground. The locators’ efforts protect underground utilities from damage during projects that involve excavation. These are daytime, full-time positions where overtime is required. We work some weekends as needed and also require you to be physically ready for extended hours in all weather conditions.
