About the role
The Utility Excavator Operator safely operates excavators and related heavy equipment to support underground utility and pipeline installation, including trench excavation, grading, bedding, pipe placement, backfilling, and other earthwork while collaborating with pipelayers, laborers, and site supervisors.
Responsibilities
- Able to stand and work outdoors in direct sunlight for long periods of time
- Set up and use a pipe laser
- Lay 8-inch to 48-inch pipe inside structures and trenches
- Work with storm drainage, water, and sewer systems
- Shoot and maintain proper grade
- Work with different sizes and configurations of trench boxes, including single and double-stacked trench boxes
- Proper trench-box installation, movement, and removal
- Operate an excavator safely and efficiently
- Safely handle a trench box and material box during excavation operations
- Safely excavate around laborers and other employees working inside or near the trench
- Understand excavation safety, underground utilities, proper slopes, trench protection, and safe working distances
Requirements
- Experience operating excavators on a utility crew
- Able to climb in and out of equipment unassisted
- Valid driver’s license (must maintain)
- Frequently lift 20 pounds and occasionally lift up to 50 pounds
- Willing and able to travel to other project sites throughout the Southeastern U.S. as needed
- Flexible work schedule, including working overtime and weekends as needed
Preferred: Confined Space Training, OSHA 7410 training/certification.
