About the role
The San Francisco Public Utilities Commission (SFPUC) is seeking two (2) individuals to join their team. This is a provisional (TPV) appointment, meaning the candidate must pass a Civil Service examination and be selected through an open competitive process to become a permanent employee.
Responsibilities
- Inspects, maintains, repairs, installs, and tests a variety of electrical equipment, up to 24,000 Volts, at utility facilities.
- Maintains high voltage conductors; locates, isolates, removes and repairs faulty sections.
- Performs de-energized maintenance, repairs, installation and testing of a variety of electrical operating components of circuit breakers and transformers at substations, switchyards, and power generating facilities rated up to 300,000 Volts.
- Maintains, operates, and adjusts power generating and substation equipment, including photovoltaic (solar).
- Installs above ground and below ground conduits and pulls, terminates, and tests wire for motors, control panels, lighting fixtures, outlets, and other electrical equipment.
- Performs phase balancing operations and makes load computations on a variety of electrical circuits; installs and maintains digital and analog circuit protective devices such as uninterruptible power supplies (UPS's) and ground fault circuit interrupters.
- Performs insulation testing of cabling and motors, etc. to locate electrical faults.
- Erects and uses ladders, scaffolds, staging, aerial lift trucks, light towers, and other related equipment.
- Makes as-built and shop drawings of electrical installations.
- Operates, racks and repairs circuit breakers and disconnect switches rated up to 24,000 volts.
- Maintains, and repairs motor starters, including variable frequency drives rated up to 24,000 volts.
- Prepares and submits reports for time, material used and completed work.
- Performs related duties as required.
Requirements
- Completion of a recognized five-year Inside Wireman Apprenticeship Program or other verifiable recognized five-year training program specific to industrial electrical equipment.
- Two (2) years of verifiable journey-level electrician experience in the installation, maintenance, and operation of high voltage (above 600 volts).
- Possession of a valid California (Class C) driver license.
Desirable Qualifications
- Experience installing and maintaining Industrial Electrical systems.
- Extensive experience in troubleshooting.
- Extensive experience working with Transformers, Motors, Motor Controls, VFD’s (1-2500hp), Speed drives, SCADA and DCS systems.
- Extensive experience bending, cutting and threading Galvanized Rigid Steel conduit and PVC-coated Galvanized Rigid Steel conduit.
- Experience working on large pumps and the associated motors (350hp-2500hp), motor controllers, circuit breakers and switchgear, up to 4160 vac.
- Working knowledge of Limitorque and Auma valve actuators used in the transmission and distribution of drinking water.
- Experience working on UPS 500va to 150kva.
- Experience working around chemicals.
- Experience installing and repairing chemical injection pumps.
- Experience, with no reservations to working in Confined Spaces, Bucket Trucks and Scissor Lifts.
- Extensive experience performing electrical work at Industrial, commercial and residential sites and facilities.
- Experience operating/repairing Medium Voltage Equipment.
- Experience working with voltages up to 60kv.

$169,364 annually
