About the role

Join Boswell Engineering as a Lead Protection & Control Design Engineer supporting our Electric Utility clients. This hybrid role, based in South Hackensack, NJ, offers a balance of office, remote, and site work across the Mid-Atlantic region. You will design and operate protection and control systems for safe, reliable transmission and distribution, analyze system operations, and lead cross-functional teams on capital projects and system performance improvements.

Responsibilities

  • Review and evaluate proposed changes to existing electric facilities for compatibility with client protection system standards.
  • Create new Protection and Control system designs in accordance with client standards.
  • Specify materials for new or modified Protection and Control systems.
  • Develop, calculate, and document settings and logic for protective relays, logic processors, feeder reclosers, and switches.
  • Perform coordination studies by modeling and analyzing electric system elements using fault simulation software.
  • Analyze protection system operations during system disturbances to support Substation Technical Event analysis.
  • Lead cross-functional teams to drive technical decisions for substation capital projects.
  • Develop work requests and RFPs, and evaluate proposals for outsourced work.
  • Manage multiple contractors delivering engineering and design services.
  • Oversee technical implementation of complex capital projects and system performance programs.
  • Interface with Planning, Operations, and Field personnel to support transmission and distribution system activities.
  • Perform work activities in a self-sufficient manner.
  • Conduct peer checks of other group member designs and relay settings.

Requirements

  • BS/MS in Electrical Engineering with an active Professional Engineer License (P.E.) in the USA.
  • 8+ years of Protection and Controls experience supporting major electric utilities substation design projects.
  • Ability and willingness to travel to client meetings and sites as needed.

Qualifications

  • Familiarity with QA/QC processes, AutoCAD, and SEL software.
  • Experience with SEL and IEEE Relay System Protection Guides, Standards, and Practices.
  • Experience performing overcurrent and distance coordination studies with ASPEN One-liner or equivalent software.
  • Experience performing post-event analysis using relay and digital fault recorder event records.
  • Experience designing and installing protection and control schemes utilizing IEC61850 protocol.
  • Experience preparing and/or modifying schematics, wiring, and logic drawings.

Pay

Salary Range: $140,000.00 - $165,000.00 per year.
