Utilities Construction Worker I, II, III, Senior

About the role

This position is responsible for performing heavy, manual work installing and maintaining County sewer collection network. Duties include clearing easements, repairing and cleaning sewer lines, mixing concrete, adjusting and repairing manholes, assisting construction crews, and maintaining and cleaning tools and equipment.

Responsibilities

  • Clears easements by brush cutting, weed trimming, and using chainsaw to cut trees or limbs.
  • Repairs and cleans sewer lines and systems.
  • Mixes concrete.
  • Adjusts and repairs manholes.
  • Assists construction crew in all phases of daily operations.
  • Maintains and cleans tools and equipment.

Requirements

  • Valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia.
  • High school diploma or GED.
  • One (1) year of satisfactory York County experience at the Utilities Construction Worker I level, or two (2) years of direct utilities construction experience.
  • Completion or possession of the following certifications/trainings or ability to obtain within one (1) year of employment:
  • Competent Person Trench Safety
  • Confined Space Entry
  • Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Virginia Flagger
  • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) Flagger
  • Mandatory County annual training
  • General knowledge of Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA)
  • Ability to be entered into on-call rotation

Qualifications

  • Two (2) years of satisfactory York County experience at the Utilities Construction Worker II level, or four (4) years of direct utilities construction experience.
  • Valid Virginia Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) - Class B with Tanker Endorsement.
  • Certifications/Trainings:
  • Pipeline / Manhole / Lateral Assessment Certifications (PACP, MACP, LACP)
  • Advanced knowledge of flusher / vactor operations
  • Advanced knowledge of heavy equipment operations

Skills

  • General knowledge of performing preventive maintenance on hand and power tools.
  • General knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures.
  • Ability to properly operate a variety of hand and power tools associated with utility maintenance.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor for extended periods of time, often under unfavorable conditions.

Utilities Construction Worker I: Advertised salary range: $46,581 - $54,753.50 Utilities Construction Worker II: Advertised salary range: $48,910 - $57,491.25 Utilities Construction Worker III: Advertised salary range: $53,923 - $63,383.75 depending on qualifications Senior Utilities Construction Worker: Advertised salary range: $59,450 - $69,880.5 depending on qualifications

Schedule

Position is considered an essential position which requires the individual to report to work during inclement and extreme weather conditions outside of normal working hours, or when county offices are closed. Position is also required to be “on-call” on a regularly scheduled rotating basis.
