About the role

The Web4M project (Wetland Biogeochemistry: Mechanisms, Models, Management, Methods) focuses on understanding wetland biogeochemistry, greenhouse gas fluxes, hydrology, soil processes, and ecological change in Prairie Pothole Region wetlands. The internship is designed as a hands-on STEM research experience that provides exposure to field ecology, environmental monitoring, laboratory techniques, data management, and federal research careers.

Responsibilities

  • Train as part of ongoing field and laboratory efforts associated with wetland soil, water, vegetation, and greenhouse gas research at sites in North Dakota, including the Cottonwood Lake Study Area and other regional wetlands.
  • Participate in field sampling and laboratory processing associated with wetland biogeochemistry research.
  • Field activities may include collection of soil cores, water samples, vegetation measurements, greenhouse gas flux measurements, and deployment or maintenance of field equipment.
  • Laboratory activities may include sample preparation, drying and weighing soils, organizing samples, water chemistry preparation, and data entry.
  • Gain experience with computer-based tasks such as organizing datasets, spreadsheet management, basic GIS or mapping support, figure preparation, and assisting with quality control of environmental datasets.
  • Participate in research discussions, team meetings, and scientific planning activities to gain broader exposure to interdisciplinary environmental research.
