USGS Environmental DNA Surveillance and Analyses for Aquatic Invasive Species in National Parks

About the role

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) is seeking a fellow to support the integration of environmental DNA (eDNA) approaches into the National Park Service (NPS) manager toolbox. The project aims to enhance the early detection of aquatic invasive species, particularly invasive mussels, using advanced eDNA sampling techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare eDNA sample kits
  • Deploy and maintain eDNA autonomous samplers
  • Conduct eDNA laboratory analyses
  • Collaborate with NPS units on eDNA sampling projects

Requirements

The ideal candidate should be currently pursuing or have recently completed a master's degree in relevant fields such as Chemistry and Materials Sciences. Applicants must demonstrate strong analytical skills and a commitment to environmental conservation.

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Chemistry and Materials Sciences or related field
  • Within the last 36 months or anticipated to be received by 6/30/2029

Skills

Strong analytical skills, proficiency in laboratory techniques, and ability to work independently and collaboratively are essential. Experience with environmental monitoring and familiarity with eDNA sampling methods are preferred.
