(USA) Principal, Software Engineer
About the role
As part of Walmart Global Tech, you will build industry-defining seller and customer experiences to grow the marketplace platform. You will provide insights and intelligence on marketplace-related transactions and deliver capabilities to associates supporting all segments of Walmart. Responsibilities
- Provide deep technical expertise and thought leadership to accelerate adoption of best engineering practices while staying current with industry innovations and trends.
- Lead and participate in medium to large-scale projects by reviewing requirements, translating them into technical solutions, writing and developing code, and conducting unit testing.
- Communicate status and issues to team members and stakeholders.
- Develop highly scalable services to process millions of requests per day and solve complex software systems problems using state-of-the-art technology.
- Design and develop backend microservices and APIs for web applications using the JVM ecosystem (Kotlin, Java) and other languages/frameworks (Python, Go).
- Collaborate with project teams and cross-functional teams.
- Troubleshoot open issues and bug fixes, ensuring on-time delivery and hand-offs.
- Interact with project managers to provide input on project plans.
- Troubleshoot business and production issues by gathering relevant information (e.g., issue, impact, criticality, root cause) and engaging support teams for resolution.
- Formulate action plans, perform root cause analysis to prevent future issues, and complete online documentation.
- Provide support to the business by responding to users' questions, concerns, and issues (e.g., technical feasibility, implementation strategies).
- Facilitate resolutions and lead cross-functional partnerships.
- Drive high-visibility projects across the organization.
- Lead team projects, including designing systems and apps, and translating requirements into technical solutions during the discovery phase.
Requirements
- Master's in Computer Science with 10+ years of experience in architecting large-scale systems with a focus on scalability and delivering sub-second latencies at 99.99% uptime.
- Expertise in one or more programming languages (e.g., Java, Python).
- Strong background in algorithms and data structures.
- Experience leading teams and delivering large-scale distributed systems and event-driven architectures.
- Proven understanding of microservices-oriented architecture and extensible REST APIs.
- Experience with cloud application development, including scalable, data-driven, cost-optimized, and message-oriented architectures.
- Hands-on experience with public or private cloud offerings (e.g., AWS, GAE, Azure).
- Experience with automation tools (e.g., Appium, Selenium, Jira, Rest Assured, Gatling) or equivalent is a plus.
- Experience with CI/CD pipelines and best practices; automated deployment experience is a plus.
- Advanced knowledge of performance, scalability, and system architecture with a focus on reducing technical debt.
- Practical knowledge of agile software development methodologies (e.g., XP, Scrum).
- Experience and fluency with relational/non-relational databases (e.g., MySQL, Oracle, Cassandra).
- Strong inclination toward exploring and learning new technologies.
- Understanding of machine learning is preferred.
- Previous experience in the marketplace domain.
Minimum Qualifications
- Option 1: Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, computer information systems, software engineering, or related area and 5 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
- Option 2: 7 years’ experience in software engineering or related area.
Preferred Qualifications
- Master’s degree in Computer Science or related field and 4 years' experience in software engineering or related field.

Pay
The annual salary range for this position is $143,000.00 - $286,000.00. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses and stock for certain positions.
