As a Principal Data Scientist at Walmart, you will lead the development and deployment of advanced analytical models and machine learning solutions that drive strategic business decisions. About the team

At Walmart Connect, the AdTech Engineering team builds advanced platforms and AI-driven solutions that unify advertising, commerce, and data. The team tackles complex challenges including automated media generation and next-generation AI systems to improve operations for advertisers, sellers, and internal partners. Utilizing extensive first-party data and an AI-first approach, the team pioneers intelligent agents and autonomous workflows that shape the future of retail advertising. Engineers contribute to impactful products that drive measurable outcomes, accelerate growth, and influence millions of customer journeys daily, applying expertise in machine learning, data architecture, and advanced analytics.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, test, and deploy advanced data science solutions using programming languages such as Python and SQL to address complex business challenges.
  • Analyze business problems to identify root causes and recommend data-driven approaches aligned with strategic objectives.
  • Identify, source, and validate high-quality data to support analytical modeling and insights generation.
  • Design and implement machine learning models, including feature engineering and validation, to drive predictive and prescriptive analytics.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to translate business requirements into actionable data strategies and visualization frameworks.
  • Mentor team members on analytical techniques, coding best practices, and model development.
  • Monitor model performance and ensure sustainability through lifecycle management and continuous improvement.

Requirements

  • Extensive experience in machine learning algorithms, deep learning, and advanced statistical analysis.
  • Proficiency in Python programming and familiarity with the full model deployment life cycle.
  • Strong knowledge of data architecture, causal inference, and agentic AI systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop, test, and deploy robust analytical models using a variety of data sources.
  • Expertise in translating complex business problems into data-driven solutions with measurable impact.
  • Proven leadership skills in mentoring teams and guiding technical development.
  • Ability to communicate insights effectively through advanced data visualization and storytelling techniques.

Qualifications

  • Option 1: Bachelor's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 5 years' experience in an analytics-related field.
  • Option 2: Master's degree in Statistics, Economics, Analytics, Mathematics, Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field and 3 years' experience in an analytics-related field.
  • Option 3: 7 years' experience in an analytics or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Data science, machine learning, optimization models.
  • PhD in Machine Learning, Computer Science, Information Technology, Operations Research, Statistics, Applied Mathematics, or Econometrics.
  • Publications or active peer reviewer in related journals or conferences.
  • Successful completion of one or more assessments in Python, Spark, Scala, or R.
  • Using open-source frameworks (e.g., scikit-learn, TensorFlow, Torch).
  • Background in creating inclusive digital experiences, demonstrating knowledge in implementing Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 AA standards, assistive technologies, and integrating digital accessibility seamlessly.

Pay

The annual salary range for this position is $132,000.00 - $264,000.00. Additional compensation includes annual or quarterly performance bonuses. For certain positions, additional compensation may include stock.
