About the role

The Development Test Engineer is responsible for evaluating, comparing, and improving the performance of gasoline engine aftertreatment systems to meet or exceed regulatory standards, optimize efficiency, and support product development. The engineer will develop and integrate system technologies including engine hardware, exhaust sensors, control strategies, calibration, and integration into propulsion systems to meet upcoming emissions standards (e.g., TIER4, California LEV IV, EURO7, China 7) for future electrified vehicle applications. Projects utilize engine, powertrain, or vehicle chassis dynamometers and/or simulation/modeling to make physics-based decisions and demonstrate proof-of-concept solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Direct/schedule day-to-day activities of engine/PT dynamometer or vehicle-based testing, including interaction with technicians and support engineers
  • Apply appropriate project management procedures and methodologies (planning, scheduling, reporting) using tools such as MS Project and Excel
  • Develop emissions systems solutions for future high-efficiency powertrains, including system trade-offs for cost, performance, complexity while meeting quality and regulatory requirements
  • Optimize/adjust engine and emissions system calibration to fit new emissions hardware
  • Investigate competitor vehicles’ emission systems through instrumentation and OBD to assess performance, identify differences, and understand strategies to meet or exceed regulatory requirements
  • Define and direct multiple technology development projects internally and at suppliers to meet critical emissions system needs
  • Plan, test, analyze, and solve complex system problems related to powertrain systems to meet objectives such as performance, emissions, diagnostics, NVH, quality, and fuel economy
  • Ensure proper integration of emissions system components (e.g., advanced catalysts, gasoline particulate filters) by communicating functional requirements to Powertrain engineering and management teams

Mandatory Skills

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Automotive, Chemical, Mechanical, or Electrical/Computer Engineering from an ABET-accredited university
  • 2+ years of accumulated experience and systems-level engineering skills with hardware, controls, or calibration development in:
    • Port-fueled and direct injection spark ignition engines for ICE and hybrid applications
    • Powertrain systems, OBD, emissions systems
    • Virtual analysis and modeling/simulation (e.g., GT-Power, AVL Boost, AxiSuite or similar tools)
    • Analyzing and running global emissions test cycles and test cell environments
    • Using powertrain data acquisition systems such as INCA, CAS, AVL Concerto, TCKs, INTECRIO
  • Working-level understanding of key combustion processes, engine hardware, thermal systems, transmission systems, OBD systems, and electrified propulsion systems
  • Knowledge of interactions and trade-offs between emissions, OBD, fuel economy, cost, drivability, and NVH
  • Ability to quickly identify, root cause, and refine calibrations to improve emissions system performance
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong leadership, interpersonal, problem-solving, and analytical skills
  • Ability to operate independently and as part of a team
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite
  • Skilled in post-processing, organizing, analyzing, and presenting technical findings to management
