About the role
The Shift Lead at UrgentVet - Liberty is responsible for performing duties of a Senior Veterinary Assistant or Veterinary Technician, providing operational support, and leading a team to ensure consistent, efficient, and high-quality care for patients.
Responsibilities
- Provide consistent leadership during each shift to support clients, coordinate paraprofessional staff, and steward hospital leadership goals.
- Direct, plan, coordinate, and perform duties concerned with animal health and client education.
- Partner with the Practice Manager and Lead DVM for effective communication with clients, hospital team members, Field Leadership, and AVG/UV Support Center departments.
- Assign cases to veterinary assistants and ensure clarity of responsibilities.
- Identify and resolve bottlenecks in medical operations.
- Assist with client resolution decisions, invoice adjustments, and client experience exceptions.
- Train and mentor new paraprofessional staff.
- Address broken equipment issues and assist in inventory management.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Must be able to lift 40 lbs.
- Regular on-site presence is required due to the essential function of the role in supporting patient care, responding to time-sensitive needs, collaborating with clinical teams, and maintaining the safety and well-being of patients, clients, and staff.
Qualifications
- Two years of experience in healthcare, veterinary profession, or service-type industry.
- Medical background with medical terminology training.
- Associate degree or veterinary technician certification/licensure preferred.
- Six months of prior experience in a management position strongly preferred.
- Animal handling experience including patient restraint, sample collection, and monitoring.
- Clinical skills including phlebotomy, catheter placement, laboratory analysis, and drug calculation.

- Professionalism, dependability, healthy and positive communication skills, and the ability to multi-task in a hands-on environment.
- Energetic people-and-pet person with excellent work ethic and social and organizational skills.
- Willingness to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Prior customer service experience.
- Prior experience working with animals in a hospital setting.
