About the role

This position supports the delivery of high-quality, patient-centered care within Banner Health Urgent Care. The Medical Assistant assists healthcare providers with clinical procedures, patient assessments, and administrative duties to ensure efficient operation of the clinic. The incumbent will float to other Banner Health Urgent Care clinics within the surrounding area based on operational needs.

Location: Banner Health Urgent Care – West Valley, Zone 1. Part-time, two 12-hour shifts per week. Schedule is variable; must be available to work any day of the week, including weekends.

Responsibilities

  • Prepares patient for exam and treatment by taking and recording vital signs, symptoms, and other necessary measurements; documents chief complaint and pain scores as appropriate.
  • Reports condition of patient which may indicate a change in the patient's condition to the clinician.
  • Assists providers with exams and minor in-office procedures, including taking blood pressure, documenting respiration and heart rate/pulse, taking temperature, performing phlebotomies, ear irrigation, and EKGs.
  • Acts as chaperon as needed.
  • Uses universal blood and body fluid precautions at all times and personal protective equipment as needed.
  • Prioritizes patient flow through the clinical process.
  • Coordinates and manages patient care, including pre-certifications, referrals, authorizations, prescriptions, and scheduling for clinic, hospital, and other medical treatments/tests.
  • Communicates test results to patients.
  • Acts as a resource to clinicians to provide optimal patient care.
  • Administers medications in accordance with established policies and procedures or as directed.
  • Provides clerical support, including patient/client notifications and documentation (e.g., complete medical records, labs, authorizations, X-rays, hospital records).
  • Ensures complete and accurate information for billing related to the patient encounter in a timely fashion.
  • Maintains a clean, functional environment, including cleaning and disinfection of equipment, exam rooms, and storage areas.
  • Disinfects equipment and instruments using appropriate solutions following sterilization procedures.
  • Follows manufacturer's recommendations and OSHA guidelines in handling hazardous substances.
  • Performs basic maintenance of equipment and coordinates needed maintenance for prompt repairs.
  • Orders supplies as directed and stocks patient care areas.
  • Manages medication ordering and tasks related to all medications (e.g., expired medications/equipment and recalls).
  • Develops and maintains effective communication with all external and internal customers.
  • Completes all necessary on-boarding/orientation activities, including simulation training, as needed or directed.

Requirements

  • High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
  • Completion of an approved medical assistant training program as defined by state regulations.
  • Active Medical Assistant Certification is required. Certification must meet the requirements for Meaningful use. Accepted certifications include:
    • Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with proof of current membership from American Medical Technologists (AMT).
    • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with proof of current membership from American Association of Medical Assistants (AAMA).
    • Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with proof of current membership from National Health Career Association (NHA) (test administered after 7/1/2017 only).
    • National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA) with proof of current membership from National Certified Competency Testing (NCCT).
  • BLS certification required.
  • Strong computer skills, including the ability to work with medical software.
  • Exceptional interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple changing priorities in an effective and organized fashion.
  • Employees working in a Behavioral Health clinical setting that serves children must possess an Arizona Fingerprint Clearance Card at the time of hire and maintain it for the duration of their employment. An Arizona Criminal History Affidavit must be signed upon hire.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with office medical procedures and treatments.
  • Knowledge of insurance, managed care operations, EMR, and scheduling software.
