Upper School Long-Term Substitute Performing Arts Associate Teacher of Dance and Arts Coordinator

About the Role

Germantown Academy is seeking a dedicated, experienced, and versatile Performing Arts Associate Teacher to serve as a maternity leave substitute during the end of the 1st Semester and beginning of the 2nd Semester in the 2026-2027 school year. This full-time, long-term substitute position runs from December 1, 2026, to March 14, 2027, and includes benefits.

Reporting to the Belfry Director and Upper School Performing Arts Department Head, this individual will teach Upper School dance classes, serve as the Upper School Belfry Theatre Club and performing arts associate, and act as the choreographer for the Upper School (Belfry) Musical.

Responsibilities

  • Daytime Teaching (8:20 am - 3:00 pm):
    • Teach/lead one course: Dance Technique and Composition (Upper School).
    • Teach dance technique classes throughout the semester (Jazz, Modern, Ballet, and other genres as welcomed).
    • Mentor embodied research on influential dance artists.
    • Teach compositional techniques.
    • Co-teach one course: Musical Theater (Upper School).
    • Perform administrative responsibilities as the Belfry and Performing Arts Associate, including rehearsal schedules and ticketing.
    • Provide Middle School/Upper School Choir support and Front of House management, culminating in managing each performance.
  • After-School Commitments (3:00-6:30 pm, flexible):
    • Attend and lead musical auditions, including a dance audition.
    • Lead dance rehearsals for the Upper School Belfry Musical on scheduled days.
    • Attend a few weekend rehearsals/run-throughs.
    • Be present for all tech rehearsals (3:00-7:30 pm, March 1st - March 11th) and shows (March 12th - March 14th).

Requirements

  • Experience teaching students in grades 9-12 using best pedagogical practices.
  • Degree in Dance, a related field of study, or significant studio and professional experience.
  • Excitement to participate in school life beyond the classroom.
  • Commitment to student-centered learning.
  • Collaborative and growth mindset as a teacher and professional.
  • Cultural competency necessary for working with a diverse population in an equitable and inclusive community.
  • Flexibility to use technology in support of student learning and other professional responsibilities.
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, with colleagues, students, and families.
  • Ability to model a culture of flexible, continuous learning to challenge and support students.

Qualifications

  • Strong knowledge of dance technique, choreography, and production.
  • Ability to work in a collaborative environment with fellow directors and student designers.
  • Ability to supervise student-led creative work and provide constructive feedback.
  • Excellent organizational and communication skills.
  • Experience with performance, production, and costuming preferred.

Full-time position from December 1, 2026, to March 14, 2027. Work hours include daytime teaching (8:20 am - 3:00 pm) and after-school commitments (3:00-6:30 pm, flexible), with additional weekend and evening responsibilities during tech rehearsals and performances.
