About the Role
Under the general supervision of the School Principal, facilitate student success and growth in academic and interpersonal skills through implementing district-approved curriculum, documenting teaching and student progress, addressing specific educational needs, and creating a flexible, safe, and optimal learning environment. Provide feedback to students, parents, and administration regarding student progress, expectations, and goals.
Responsibilities
- Develop and administer elementary curriculum consistent with school district goals and objectives.
- Promote a classroom environment that is safe and conducive to individualized and small-group instruction.
- Develop lesson plans and instructional materials; translate lesson plans into engaging learning experiences.
- Differentiate instruction using a variety of styles to inspire mixed-culture and ability classes.
- Conduct ongoing assessment of student learning and modify instructional methods to fit individual needs, including students with special needs.
- Instruct students in responsible citizenship and other subjects as specified by applicable laws and regulations.
- Acquire professional knowledge and stay current with developments in the educational field through seminars, workshops, or research.
- Maintain accurate and complete records of student activities, achievement, and attendance.
- Encourage parental involvement and ensure effective communication with students and parents.
- Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve a functional learning atmosphere.
- Coordinate with other elementary staff to evaluate and assess curriculum; participate in faculty meetings and committees.
- Select and requisition appropriate books, instructional aids, supplies, and equipment; maintain inventory records.
- Supervise students during out-of-classroom activities, including those involving school transportation.
- Administer standardized tests in accordance with district testing programs.
- Perform other related tasks as assigned by the Principal or central office administrators.
Requirements
- Valid Michigan teaching certificate.
- Must meet State of Michigan requirements for Professional Development.
- Understanding of working with standards.
- Experience with current school math curriculum.
- Experience teaching within the Balanced Literacy format.
- Strong reading background.
- Proven classroom management skills.
- Understanding of a "learning styles" approach to instruction and respect for students' multiple intelligences.
- Able to work as part of a collaborative team.
- EL certification or experience working with EL students preferred.
Skills
- Knowledge of current teaching methods, educational pedagogy, and differentiated instruction.
- Knowledge of elementary school curriculum and concepts.
- Knowledge of data information systems, data analysis, and action-plan formulation.
- Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education and students.
- Ability to use computer network systems and software applications.
- Ability to organize and coordinate work effectively.
- Strong communication skills with students and parents.
- Ability to engage in self-evaluation regarding performance and professional growth.
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships.

Physical and Mental Demands
- While performing duties, the employee is required to stand, walk, sit, use hands, reach with hands and arms, climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl, talk, hear (in quiet or noisy environments), taste, and smell.
- Must occasionally lift and/or move up to 40 pounds.
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, and ability to adjust focus.
- Work environment noise level is usually loud to moderate.
- Mental functions include comparing, analyzing, communicating (orally and in writing), copying, coordinating, instructing, computing, synthesizing, evaluating, using interpersonal skills, compiling, and negotiating.
