About the role
This is an entry-level Police Officer position where the incumbent learns to perform the duties of a Police Officer. Once certified through on-the-job training, the officer performs those duties as a University Police 1.
Responsibilities
- Enforces state laws through patrolling designated areas by vehicle and foot to deter crime, detect violations, and identify wanted vehicles, persons, or unusual conditions
- Responds to calls for assistance and emergencies
- Apprehends and arrests violators when probable cause exists
- Interacts and establishes rapport with the campus community
- Testifies in court cases as necessary
- Conducts preliminary and follow-up investigations by interviewing victims, witnesses, suspects, and confidential informants; collects, preserves, and processes evidence
- Performs searches and conducts surveillance
- Responds to calls for service, evaluates situations, and determines appropriate action
- Assists in crowd control and responds to emergency situations
- Administers emergency medical aid as a certified “First Responder”
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED
- Valid Driver’s License (Class C or equivalent)
- Must be 21 years of age to enter the academy
- Working knowledge of citizens' rights and responsibilities
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing
- Ability to operate two-way radios and telephones in various environments
- Sensitivity in interactions with a diverse population
- Ability to comprehend laws, ordinances, rules, and regulations
- Physical ability to sit, stand, drive, walk, climb, and run for sustained periods; lift, drag, and carry heavy objects; enter and exit vehicles quickly; and operate emergency vehicles under all conditions
- Ability to meet Maryland Police Training Commission and Institutional proficiency requirements in the care and use of firearms
- Ability to work while wearing personal protective equipment
Schedule
This position is classified as ESSENTIAL personnel and requires working varied shifts, including weekends and holidays.
Pay
Minimum starting salary of $63,848 annually.
