Job Summary
Towson University (TU) is one of the nation’s top 100 public universities located north of Baltimore. Currently enrolling over 19,000 students, TU is part of the prestigious University System of Maryland. The Towson University Police Department is seeking a university Police Officer IV-Sgt. to enforce state laws, university regulations, and perform various law enforcement duties.
Responsibilities
- Supervisory duties include assigning patrol responsibility and establishing work priorities; instructing, directing, and guiding personnel on a patrol shift; assisting in scheduling and managing day-to-day operations; assigning and reviewing work; monitoring and evaluating performance of subordinate personnel; and initiating disciplinary actions as necessary.
- Inspecting police and support personnel on patrol shift to ensure compliance with departmental policies, regulations, and procedures.
- Preparing, maintaining, and reviewing a variety of operational and administrative reports, logs, and ledgers.
- Enforcing the laws of the State of Maryland; conducting preliminary and follow-up investigations; patrolling designated areas of campus to maintain a visible presence and enforce university parking regulations; and determining appropriate course of action.
Qualifications and Skills
- High school diploma or equivalent; certification as a sworn Police Officer recognized by the Maryland Police training commission within the last three (3) years and two (2) years of experience as a sworn police officer.
- Three (3) years of experience supervising police officers is preferred.
- Must possess and maintain a valid Maryland non-commercial class C or equivalent driver's license with no more than 5 points.
Qualifications
- Additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full-performance of the work of the job class may be substituted or the education or experience requirement one year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience.
Background Check
- A criminal background investigation, pre-employment physical, polygraph, and psychological evaluation are required for the hired candidate and the results may impact employment.
Salary and Benefits
- Minimum starting salary at $82,131 annually, as shown in the UPO pay scale found here, and full University benefits that include annual leave, up to 17 holidays, personal and sick days; excellent health, life, and retirement plans; and tuition remission.
- The UPO starting pay may vary as dependent upon MOU guidelines.
