University Police Officer
About the role
The Princeton University Department of Public Safety is seeking an entry-level, sworn University Police Officer. This is a sponsored position where the department will cover the costs associated with the New Jersey police academy tuition, uniforms, and equipment for a successful candidate.
Responsibilities
- Provide campus safety, security, and law enforcement services to the University community.
- Enforce University regulations, local ordinances, and state laws.
- Conduct initial and follow-up investigations into significant and criminal incidents.
- Work under the direction of a sergeant and be available to respond to incidents, accidents, and emergencies, including weekends, holidays, and overtime shifts.
- Participate in crime prevention and community-oriented public safety programming.
- Project a positive image and enforce University regulations.
Requirements
- Meet the qualifications necessary for New Jersey police licensing.
- Pass the physical fitness standards required for police academy admission if not currently licensed or certified.
- Have a high school diploma or equivalent.
- Hold a current valid vehicle operator's license.
- Successfully complete various fitness for duty assessments, including online testing, comprehensive background investigation, and psychological evaluation.
- Meet Post Offer Pre-Employment Screening (POPES) requirements and be found capable of performing the essential functions and physical requirements of the position.
- Be physically fit and able to defend oneself from attack or physical assault.
- Have 20-20 or 20-30 vision either naturally or with corrective lenses.
- Wear the required uniform, including a protective vest.
- Provide evidence of medical immunity to certain diseases that may pose risk to animals within labs/vivarium.
Qualifications
- At least two years of work and/or life experience directly relating to a minimum of two of the following areas: Community service/involvement; Interviewing, public speaking, and conflict resolution skills; Problem solving, using creative methods to resolve issues; or Multi-cultural work and life experiences.
- Associate or Bachelor's degree.
- Current New Jersey Police Officer Certification/License; approval of New Jersey Training Commission for police commission.
Skills
Strong communication, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills are essential. Proficiency with assigned firearms and ability to work under stress are also required.
Benefits
This position is unionized and falls under the Fraternal Order of Police (FOP). Officers attending the Police Academy earn a salary according to the FOP contract. The starting salary for an officer with their PTC is $64,266/year = $30.90/hour. For those with more than 20 years of law enforcement service, the starting salary is up to $70,000. The position has a 12-month probationary period.
