University Police Communications & Security Specialist 1 (Grade 10) - NY HELPS

Farmingdale State College, a campus of the State University of New York (SUNY), is seeking a University Police Communications and Security Specialist 1 to join its University Police Department in a 24/7 operation.

About the role

University Police Communications and Security Specialists serve as the initial point of contact between the police and the public. They perform dispatching activities, operate various databases, online systems, and multiple video sources, and provide communications, security, and public safety services under the direction of the University Police Department shift supervisor.

Responsibilities

• Control base, fixed, or mobile communication systems and maintain status and control over all mobile radio units in service.
• Monitor all equipment in the dispatch area and report departures from required procedures to the appropriate supervisor.
• Report emergency situations to supervisory personnel, including the inability to establish communications with a mobile unit.
• Operate computers, communications, and support equipment in compliance with New York State E-Justice and National Crime Information Center rules and regulations.
• Operate radio, telephone, broadcast equipment, closed-circuit television systems, and electronic security systems.
• Monitor, activate, deactivate, and control electronic access systems.
• Enter, update, and query information in various computer systems.
• Retrieve and review messages from data systems and store or distribute them according to prescribed procedures.
• Prepare written reports and maintain the police department blotter as assigned.
• Operate logging devices to automatically record video, radio, and telephone transmissions, and archive them as required.
• Maintain communications files and perform other communication-related duties as required by the shift supervisor.
• Perform security guard duties to support campus police operations, including responding to calls for assistance to secure property until a police officer arrives.
• Assist with calls for service such as unlocking doors, providing safety escorts, and inspecting safety equipment.
• Patrol assigned areas on foot to deter criminal activity and detect and report dangerous situations such as fires.
• Post assignments at specific locations for security or safety reasons.
• Issue parking permits and citations.
• Prepare and file a variety of reports and logs, and perform other security-related activities.
• Issue and maintain department equipment.

Requirements

Minimum Requirements:

• One year of full-time experience as a Police or Peace Officer; OR
• One year of full-time experience as a dispatcher for a public safety agency including fire departments, emergency medical services, or law enforcement; OR
• One year of active service and an Honorable Discharge from the United States military, where you served as a dispatcher or military police/security personnel.

Minimum Requirement Substitution:

• 30 semester college credit hours from an accredited school.

Pay

Grade 10. Annual compensation: $49,454 base salary + $1,550 FSS pay + $3,400 location pay + $1,075 hazardous duty pay = $55,479 total annual compensation.

This position is part of the New York State Hiring for Emergency Limited Placement Statewide Program (NY HELPS). There is no examination required for appointment. Within one year of permanent appointment, NY HELPS employees will have their non-competitive employment status converted to competitive status without needing to take an exam. Transfers from other New York State agencies are welcome. Applicants may also be appointed if currently reachable on the appropriate eligible list for this title or are a current New York State employee with one year or more of qualifying permanent service in a position allocated to a Grade 6 or above.
