About the role
At the University of Vienna, we are looking for a University Assistant (predoctoral/PhD Candidate) to join the Quantum Nanophysics Team (QNP) around Prof. Markus Arndt. This 4-year position focuses on experiments at the interface between quantum and classical physics, as well as quantum and bio-molecular science. The team develops universal matter-wave interferometry for high-mass and high-complexity systems, including organic molecules, metal clusters, and dielectric nanoparticles. Research areas include quantum sensing, mass spectrometry, biomolecular chemistry, and novel tools for quantum interferometry and optomechanics.
The QNP team is part of several key research networks: the Austrian Cluster of Excellence (qAustria), the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ), and the faculty research group on Quantum Science. You will join a thriving community of over 100 quantum scientists on-site, with broader connections to 300 in Vienna and 600 across Austria.
The team consists of 15–17 scientists from six nations, collaborating to solve technical challenges in quantum science. You will contribute to the research project V-QUTE, which aims to push the limits of matter-wave interferometry with nanoparticles. This includes developing new particle sources, quantum coherent beam splitters, advanced detectors, and specialized ultraviolet laser systems. The goal is to advance quantum superposition/macroscopicity by 4–6 orders of magnitude beyond the current state of the art. The experiment will initially be prepared in existing facilities and relocated to a new laboratory in 2027.
Responsibilities
- Actively participate in the V-QUTE research project, focusing on advancing matter-wave interferometry and macroscopicity in quantum physics.
- Present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12–18 months, with annual reviews.
- Work independently on your dissertation, aiming for completion within 4 years, while demonstrating high social competence for team success.
- Contribute to teaching, including lab courses and exercise classes, as outlined in the collective bargaining agreement.
- Handle administrative tasks to support the group’s research, teaching, and organizational needs.
- Stay informed about advancements in your field and contribute to outreach through publications, conference presentations, and public activities.
Requirements
- Completed Master’s degree or Diploma in physics before starting the position, or an equivalent qualification allowing enrollment as a PhD student at the University of Vienna.
- High experimental skills, from planning and implementation to data acquisition and processing.
- Hands-on experience in at least two of the following areas:
- Molecular beam sources
- (Cryogenic) ultra-high-vacuum systems
- Nanoparticle cooling
- Cluster science
- Advanced optics
- Laser systems and frequency conversion
- Mass spectrometry or matter-wave research
- Demonstrable skills in experimental design, construction, and troubleshooting in the laboratory (document these in your application).
- Excellent command of written and spoken English.
