This is a multi-skilled position requiring patient care and clerical duties. Under the direction and supervision of a licensed professional nurse, the Certified Nursing Aide - Unit Support Associate provides care appropriate to the patient population served and daily routine patient care needs. The role collaborates with the interdisciplinary team to deliver care as outlined by the nurse and performs a variety of duties, including serving as a health unit coordinator, monitor tech, or performing secretarial/clerical duties for unit leadership.
Responsibilities
- Provides and documents patient care under the direction of the registered or licensed practical nurse, including activities of daily living such as meals, bathing, ambulating, toileting, and turning/repositioning.
- Assists with maintaining patient stability by checking and recording vital signs and documenting intake and output.
- Promotes patient comfort by answering call lights and communicating observations or patient needs to nursing staff.
- Contributes to a safe and efficient admission, transfer, and/or discharge process while maintaining patient rights to comfort, privacy, and dignity.
- Creates and maintains a clean and safe environment on the unit and within patient rooms.
- Communicates and collaborates with staff, families, and other departments using effective communication skills.
- Serves as a liaison to aid communication between different groups and coordinates incoming calls, pages, and nurse call light systems.
- Follows organization’s policies and procedures in the delivery of care and interactions with caregivers.
- May handle medication delivered by the Pharmacy and transport it to an appropriate storage area or qualified personnel.
- Applies unit service excellence best practices in interactions with patients, visitors, physicians, and colleagues.
- Uses resources (e.g., time, people, supplies) cost-effectively.
- Participates in quality and performance improvement initiatives and provides care consistent with regulatory and legal expectations.
- Consistently practices safety behaviors and handles conflict resolution in a timely manner.
- Engages in professional development through self-appraisal, academic credits, or educational programs.
- May perform other duties as assigned or requested.
Requirements
- Successful completion of a state-approved Nurse Aide education program.
- Certified as a Nurse Aide by the Department of Health Professions of Virginia.
- Current, active American Heart Association Basic Life Support (AHA BLS) certification.
Preferred Qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED.
Specialized Roles
- Certified Nursing Aide – Resource Team / Centra Internal Travel Team: At least 1 year of recent acute care experience.
- Certified Nursing Aide - Stroobants (Cardiology):
- One (1) year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Preferred: Clinical background within a Cardiology setting.
- Assists in cardiac monitoring, including monitor placement and patient education.
- Certified Nursing Aide – Home Health:
- At least one (1) year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
- Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Preferred: Experience in Home Health.
- Provides hands-on personal care, assists with ambulation/exercises, and helps with self-administered medications under supervision.
- Must complete at least 12 hours of in-service training annually.
- Travel is expected to be at 100%.
- Certified Nursing Aide - Hospice:
- At least one (1) year of experience as a Certified Nursing Assistant.
- Preferred: Experience in Hospice or Homecare.
- Travel is expected to be at 100%.
Pay
$18.23 - $26.42 per hour.
