Unit Secretary - Parttime Days

About the role
We are seeking a detail-oriented, customer-focused Unit Secretary to support our laboratory and outpatient services team. This role serves as a key point of contact for patients, providers, nursing homes, and clinical staff by coordinating laboratory orders, scheduling appointments, managing patient communications, and supporting daily office operations. The successful candidate will possess strong organizational skills, excellent customer service abilities, and a commitment to accuracy in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
Responsibilities
- Process Direct Access laboratory orders for patients.
- Answer incoming patient phone calls and assist with inquiries.
- Enter laboratory orders received via fax, hand delivery, electronic transmission, or from nursing home facilities.
- Contact provider offices to obtain missing, incomplete, or expired laboratory orders.
- Schedule patient appointments and assist with appointment coordination.
- Receive and process incoming patient specimens according to established procedures.
- Assist with patient check-in responsibilities during staff breaks and coverage needs.
- Perform filing, scanning, and other clerical duties to maintain accurate records.
- Complete light cleaning and organization of work areas to support a clean and professional environment.
- Collaborate with laboratory staff, providers, nursing homes, and other departments to ensure efficient patient service.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Previous healthcare, medical office, customer service, or clerical experience preferred but not required.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to multitask and prioritize responsibilities effectively.
- Proficiency with computers and electronic medical record systems preferred.
- Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- At least one year experience in a healthcare setting and knowledge of medical terminology preferred.
- May require Basic Life Support (BLS) certification dependent upon department.
Preferred Skills
- Knowledge of medical terminology and laboratory ordering processes.
- Experience scheduling appointments and handling patient phone calls.
- Experience working with healthcare providers, nursing homes, or clinical support teams.
Schedule
- Part time, 20 hours per week.
- Monday–Thursday, 8:00 AM–1:30 PM.
- No weekends or holidays.
Pay
Salary range: $15.00 - $23.00 per hour.
