Responsibilities
- Provides secretarial support to the nursing department/staff, including medical records, transcription of physician orders, and general unit operations.
- Demonstrates discretion in handling confidential information.
- Delivers new admission charts to the unit and initiates forms in preparation for admission.
- Faxes physicians’ orders daily and delivers faxed printouts to the appropriate department.
- Completes daily transfer of vital signs and weights from the daily assignment sheet to the resident’s chart.
- Schedules appointments with physicians for residents and relays information to nursing.
- Prepares discharge charts for medical records.
- Performs chart audits and reports any deficiencies to the Unit Director.
- Maintains medical records per policy.
- Schedules professional agency personnel as directed and supervised by the Director of Nursing (D.O.N.).
- Keeps the unit supplied with necessary forms.
- Orders and charges resident care supplies (e.g., tube feedings, isolation supplies) and miscellaneous unit stock.
- Completes daily staffing sheets, places them in the staffing book, and provides copies to the Unit Director.
- Assists in maintaining staffing needs on the unit and makes calls to fill staffing shortages.
- Refers requests for resident or facility information to the Unit Director or Nurse Coordinator.
- Greets and assists visitors entering the unit.
- Answers telephones, directs calls, and takes messages.
- Assists the floor as a Certified Nursing Assistant (C.N.A.) when needed.
Requirements
- Experience with medical terminology and transcription is preferred.
